What is hydrocolonotherapy and why is it dangerous to “wash out slags” from the intestine? The Ministry of Health explains

[ad_1]

The Ministry of Health does not recommend patients to use hydrocolonotherapy – cleaning of the large intestine with the help of a special device, the tube of which is inserted into the rectum.

The Ministry of Health explains that during the procedure, 20 to 60 liters of water are given through the tube. Sometimes a mixture of vitamins, herbs or certain medicines are added to the liquid. After – the injected mixture comes out naturally.

Proponents of colon cleansing argue that toxins from the gastrointestinal tract can cause a variety of health problems, including arthritis and high blood pressure. Instead, removing toxins from the digestive system, they claim, can lead to weight loss, improved digestion, increased energy, and clearer thinking.

However, according to nutritionist Kateryna Tolstikova, the intestine does not accumulate any “toxins” or “slags”.

“Indeed, undigested substances go to our rectum, and already from the rectum they are excreted in the form of feces. There are some toxic substances that can accumulate in the blood, return to the liver and thereby “poison” the body a little. But our physiological detoxification system so powerful that if it is not loaded with stress, alcohol, smoking and other harmful things, it perfectly copes with these substances and removes them.” – explained Tolstikova.

Most claims about the benefits of the procedure are unproven and have no scientific support. The Ministry of Health calls it an unproven, dangerous method with a constellation of adverse consequences for a person’s health and wallet.

The ministry lists the main risks of this procedure:

  • probability of dehydration;
  • intestinal perforation;
  • infections;
  • psychological disorders (as a result of an unpleasant procedure).

What do scientists say about hydrocolonotherapy?

This procedure has a very ancient history – it was used by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians.

This method was brought back from oblivion by the biologist Ilya Mechnikov, who in his research came to the conclusion that the body is poisoned by toxins released from the breakdown of food in the large intestine. However, as early as 1919, this theory of his was completely refuted.

In their systematic analysis from 2009, scientists Ruben D’Acosta and Brooks D Cash write not about the benefits, but about the harm of such a procedure in the article “Clinical Effects of Colon Cleansing for General Health”.

In the study, they concluded that there are no reliable controlled trials to confirm the effectiveness of the respective practice. On the contrary, they found numerous cases of adverse consequences of such colon cleansing.

The practice of colon hydrotherapy for general health improvement or treatment is not supported in any scientific medical literature.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also warned manufacturers and suppliers of colon hydrotherapy equipment about making false claims about their effectiveness.

“Hydrocolonotherapy is not a panacea, not an auxiliary method in the treatment or rehabilitation of patients, not cosmetology know-how. It is an unproven, dangerous method with a constellation of adverse consequences for a person’s health and wallet. Do not take risks and in any case do not agree to “treatment” with this miracle device”, – summarized in the Ministry of Health.

We will remind you that earlier we also wrote that the Ministry of Health does not recommend the use of physical therapy.
