46-year-old Dmytro Zmienko from Kharkiv taught history and law in his hometown for over 20 years. When the occupiers destroyed the school where he worked, he stood up for the state. The man was wounded near Bakhmut after almost a year of service, the National Rehabilitation Center “Nezlamni” reports. “When your job is taken away, you have to go defend the country!”, the teacher begins the story. He joined the ranks of the Armed Forces and joined the defense of his hometown. His students, in order to support their teacher, collected money for his drone. Photo: Nezlamni Center After half a year of service in Kharkiv Oblast, his unit was transferred to Bakhmut, where he was wounded. Dmytro and his brother were heading for water when they were spotted by an enemy drone. An enemy mortar fired at them instantly. A shrapnel munition exploded next to the teacher and lacerated his arms and legs. Brothers put on tourniquets and saved his life. The first operations were carried out by military doctors at headquarters, and later at a hospital in Dnipro. Later, he was taken to Lviv for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation of Dmytro Doctors note that the patient’s upper and lower limbs suffered multiple shrapnel wounds, fractures and nerve damage. Traumatologists in Lviv compared and recorded the broken bones. Surgeons saved the immobilized arm of the wounded man – they restored the damaged ulnar and radial nerves. After a series of operations, occupational therapists worked with Dmytro, who helped him restore the mobility of his limbs. On the way to recovery, the teacher was visited by his students, who had moved to the western regions due to the full-scale war. Dmytro admits that above all else he dreams of teaching children in his hometown again.
