There are anti-rabies care centers in every region of Ukraine – patients suspected of being infected with rabies can receive medical care, including vaccination.

If a person has been bitten or scratched by an animal (wild, stray or domestic), the affected area must be treated. To do this, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water for at least 10 minutes, and after treating the wound, apply a sterile bandage and seek medical help.

Even getting animal saliva on damaged skin can be an indication to start treatment, according to the Ministry of Health.

“At the level of medical institutions of each region, anti-rabies care centers are defined: they are equipped with vaccines, doctors of the centers provide medical assistance to patients who come in case of animal bites, scratches, maulings; carry out primary treatment; prescribe and carry out a course of anti-rabies vaccinations if necessary.” – explains Deputy Minister, Chief State Sanitary Doctor of Ukraine Ihor Kuzin.

“Rabies is a deadly viral infection, the development of which in humans can be prevented if timely vaccination is carried out. Anti-rabies vaccinations prevent the occurrence of rabies in 96-99% of cases.” – the ministry emphasizes.

According to the Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, in 2023, more than 56,000 people applied for anti-rabies assistance, and almost 22,000 of them received vaccinations.
