Why do you sometimes want to sleep after eating and how to avoid it

Feeling tired or sleepy after eating is common because it is a natural reaction of the body.
However, these sensations can be more or less vivid, depending on what, when and how much a person ate, according to MedicalNewsToday and VeryWell Health.
Some researchers believe that feeling tired after eating is because the body produces more serotonin, a chemical that plays an important role in mood regulation and affects the sleep cycle.

The amino acid tryptophan, which is found in foods rich in protein, helps our body produce serotonin. In particular:
- salmon;
- poultry meat;
- eggs;
- spinach;
- seeds;
- milk;
- cheese;
- soy products.
In addition, carbohydrates, namely foods with a high glycemic index (GI), can cause fatigue. They cause fluctuations in the level of sugar in the blood, as they are converted into sugar in the body.
When the sugar level first quickly rises and then falls, drowsiness appears.
According to scientists, how much a person eats also plays a big role.
It is better to eat in small portions, but often, scientists say. Snacking every few hours can be helpful, such as a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts.

The energy level in the body is also affected by the time of eating, because between 13:00 and 15:00, most people usually feel sleepy.
Researchers say that this is related to the biological clock: the feeling of fatigue comes seven to nine hours after waking up.
In people who follow the diet, but still feel sleepy and tired after eating, the causes of this condition can also be:
- bad sleep at night;
- drinking alcohol while eating.
For those to whom changes in the diet and meal times do not help, and fatigue interferes with everyday life, scientists advise to seek help from a doctor, as this may be a sign of a disease.
