With Cossack crosses and without plastic flowers: Drobovich explained what a memorial military cemetery can be like

On December 8, the Council voted for the creation of the National Memorial Military Cemetery in the Kyiv region.

The NMVK will be built not in the capital Bykivna, but near the Southern Cemetery in the Gatna community of the Fastiv district of the Kyiv region, not far from the village of Vita-Poshtova.

The head of the Institute of National Remembrance, Anton Drobovych, told “UP. Life” what stage the project is at and what the cemetery might look like.

According to him, they plan to make minimalist gravestones in the shape of Cossack crosses or rectangles at the cemetery.

“The most important thing is that there is a clear place, an action plan, allocated funds and this process has moved from a dead point. The details are not known at this time, because now there are only sketches.

We, for example, insisted on our part and discussed with experts that there should be Cossack crosses and rectangular tombstones, where only the coat of arms of Ukraine can be depicted for people who do not practice any religions or religious symbols of other denominations, except for Christian religions.– says Drobovych.

For example, separate images can be for Muslims (crescent moon), for Jews (star of David), for Buddhists and representatives of other religions.

All the fallen will be buried in accordance with military burial rituals.

According to the law, the cemetery provides for the creation of a museum, a crematorium, and columbarium facilities.

“At the moment, what the architect showed us were only preliminary sketches of what the cemetery could look like. As for the main memorial object, an architectural competition should definitely be held there. Depending on what the scale of the object will be, this should be foreseen and implemented construction customer”– adds the head of the Institute.

Drobovych added that there will be no fences or artificial flowers. A separate provision stipulates that there can be no artificial flowers, fences, stones, sculptural ensembles, which are not defined by law, in the cemetery.

“We hope that it will be a Cossack cross or a rectangular plate. And, accordingly, there can be a small vase made of stone or cement, where you can place either a lamp or a small flower arrangement of natural flowers.

It will not necessarily look exactly like the photo, because it is only a sketch, but there is such an option”– says Drobovych.

Reburial for urns will be possible – transfer to columbarium niches.

According to Drobovich, physical reburial in the traditional way is minimized by legislation due to a number of “ethical, epidemiological, logistical and organizational reasons”.

Regarding construction dates, Drobovich says that the first sector of burials can be built in the first half of 2024.
