Women with polycystic ovary syndrome have a higher risk of committing suicide – scientists

Scientists from Taiwan found that women who have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) may be more prone to suicide.
The results of the study, published in the scientific journal Annals of Internal Medicine, show that women with such a diagnosis had an 8.47 times higher risk of committing suicide than women without it, writes The Guardian.
According to the World Health Organization, 8% to 13% of women of reproductive age suffer from this disease. Moreover, almost 70% may not suspect that they have polycystic ovary syndrome.
The cause of its occurrence is a hormonal imbalance in the female body. As a result, the menstrual cycle may be irregular. Weight gain, skin rashes and hirsutism (facial and body hair growth) may also occur.

If left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems.
Scientists analyzed data from 8,960 women and girls aged 12 to 64 with PCOS between 1997 and 2012. They found that young girls and women are more likely to commit suicide.
Breaking down the results by age, the research team found that the risk of suicide attempts was 5.38 times higher for teenagers, 9.15 times higher for adults under 40, and 3.75 times higher for the elderly.
The authors of the study suggest that concern about the consequences of polycystic ovaries, including potential infertility, and body image (skin rashes or obesity) may be factors that play a role in this situation.
“Body image concerns, including obesity and acne, are associated with risk of suicide in adolescence, and these concerns are common among adolescents with polycystic ovary syndrome.”– notes the team of scientists.
Elderly women had a lower risk of committing suicide. According to scientists, this may be due to the fact that the symptoms of PCOS disappear with age in a milder form.
However, this is not the first study that attempts to find out the connection between polycystic ovary syndrome and suicide.
But it is known how this diagnosis affects the mental state of women.
“We know that women with PCOS are more prone to depression and anxiety. This has been proven repeatedly in a number of previous studies. This disease is understudied and mental health during this condition is also understudied.” – said Sophie Williams, a doctor from the University of Derby.
