“Writers in defense of Ukraine”: how the calendar popularizes reading and helps the army

To the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the literary agency OVO started selling a calendar “Writers in defense of Ukraine“. 100 copies were produced. All funds collected go to the purchase of anti-mine boots for sappers at the front.

The calendar contains photos of Ukrainian writers who serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Instead of a monthly format, the creators chose a weekly one – each of the 53 spreads has a photo of the artists taken on duty. Several pages are dedicated to those who could not provide a photo for security reasons, as well as to those who died in battle.

In the calendar you can see such personalities as: Olena Bilozerska, Pavlo Vyshebaba, Valery Marcus, Olena Gerasimyuk, Anatoly Dnistrovy, Dmytro Lazutkin, Mykola Kulinich, Anton Polunin, Valery Puzik and many others.

The compiler of the calendar was a researcher of military literature Anna Skorina, and she created a list of dead writers-warriors Olena Gerasimyuk.

According to the founder of the OVO Literary Agency Victoria Ma, the idea of popularizing artists through calendars arose back in 2020. Then the agency released the first calendar with half-naked writers “Literature illustrated 2021“, the next year the “Carpathian” calendar was released. Due to the war, the new edition for 2023 had to be missed.

This year, they decided to restore the tradition, but choose those artists who went to the front. As it turned out, there were so many of them that the usual format for 12 months was not suitable. And even after changing the concept, it was not possible to accommodate everyone in 53 “weeks”.

The uniqueness of this year’s edition also lies in the fact that all participants provided real photos from their service, their military life, so these are impressions of time and experience that must be preserved“, said Victoria Ma.

On the day of the start of official sales in Ukraine, it was already possible to sell 10 copies.

The presentation and first sales took place at the Frankfurt Book Fair in October. Then the initiative was supported by the Ukrainian Book Institute and the Goethe-Institut. During the event, 25 copies were sold. In particular, as Victoria Ma notes, several pairs have already been ordered for the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade.

For those who do not have the opportunity to buy a calendar, but want to support the initiative, the OVO Literary Agency together with the October cinema will hold a special event “New Year’s readings: poets in defense of Ukraine” December 28. There, ticket holders will draw a calendar with signatures of some of the participants in the calendar.
