The first laureate of the Russian literary prize “Big Book” in 2023 was Yevgeny Vodolazkin with the novel “Chagin”.
The main character of the book – Isidor Chagin – is a mnemonist: he can remember a text of any complexity and keeps it in his memory for as long as he wants. This ability of his attracts the KGB: Chagin is recruited and introduced into a Leningrad circle whose members read forbidden literature.
The second prize went to Yury Buida with the novel “Gift of Speech”, and the third prize went to Aleksey Salnikov and his “Occult Treger”.
In 2023, 322 works were nominated for the competition, fifteen of them were included in the shortlist. Laureates were chosen by a jury of 104 people, among whom are representatives of the fields of literature, culture, education and science, public and state figures, journalists and businessmen.
In parallel with the main competition, a reader’s vote was held on the LiveLib website. More than five thousand users took part in it. Readers chose Zakhar Prilepin’s documentary about the writer from the Donetsk region Mikhail Sholokhov, laureate of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1965, “Sholokhov. Illegal” as the best book.
