59% of students use artificial intelligence to prepare homework – surveys

91% of schoolchildren know about AI services, 29% use them every week. 59% of students have already used artificial intelligence to prepare homework, and approximately 40% have used it for class work.
This is evidenced by the results of an all-Ukrainian study conducted by the Projector Creative & Tech Institute and the Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine with the support of Factum Group Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
The most popular AI service among schoolchildren who took part in the survey was ChatGPT: 76% of students know about it, and 60% of them used it at least once in the last six months.
About a third of schoolchildren have heard about AI tools from the “Na Urok” project. But the services Grammarly, Bard Google, Midjourney, Notion AI and Stable Diffusion are less popular among students – less than a quarter of children know about them.

“In separate questionnaires, children anonymously admitted that they use AI tools for writing, mostly for preparing assignments in the humanities. In addition, some children explain that artificial intelligence helps generate text headings or ideas that they later use for their own creative work.” – noted in the Ministry of Education and Culture.
Students also noted that AI significantly saves their time when taking notes and clarifying data that they missed in class. It is also used for systematization of information, self-development, search for ideas, etc.
Teachers demonstrated a lower level of awareness of AI and its use in the educational process than students. In total, 76% of the surveyed teachers used AI at least once. 65% of them had a positive experience of interaction with services, while for 14% it was unsuccessful.

“Educators note that they use AI services to prepare for classes, create tests for homework, during lessons, as well as to check students’ knowledge and even in extracurricular work.
AI tools are actively used in lessons by both teachers of exact disciplines (informatics, physics, mathematics) and humanities – English, foreign literature, history and Ukrainian language.” – they say in the ministry.
37% of teachers have already engaged students in one way or another in the use of AI, and 49% plan to do so in the future. On the other hand, 39% of respondents do not plan to recommend students to use AI in education.
The survey was conducted online. It lasted during September-October 2023. More than 3,000 Ukrainians took part in the study of the popularity of AI services: 1,747 teachers and 1,443 schoolchildren (students of grades 8-11).
