70 calls per day: Kyiv residents are increasingly reporting about birds “frozen” to the ice

In Kyiv, due to the frosts and the freezing of large reservoirs, appeals about birds that “frozen” to ice have become more frequent.

As the organization Kyiv Animal Rescue Group reported, only on January 9 they received 70 calls, 10 of which were handed over to the rescuers. They helped three swans and two turkey ducks.

The swans were found on Obolon, along Pryrichna Street. They were emaciated and showed signs of illness. However, none of them actually froze to ice.

Swans could not fly, so they tried to escape from the rescuers on foot or by swimming. They have now been transferred to the Wildlife Rescue Center for treatment.

The Kyiv Animal Rescue Group emphasizes that not all birds need help in the cold.

“A group of birds (three or more individuals) that is on the ice or in a small hole does not need any human intervention. They do not freeze, but simply wait out the frost.

Being in “energy saving” mode, birds can sit for hours without moving. If you bother them, scare them and force them to fly, it will only lead to an unnecessary expenditure of their energy, but not to salvation.” – rescuers explain.

Lonely birds need help, which:

  • fought off the pack;
  • sit or walk in one place and cannot take off;
  • have obvious injuries.

We will remind you that the Wild Hamster Rescue Center has already saved 15 rodents in the Chernivtsi and Vinnytsia regions in six months. These animals are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine.
