In an aqua farm in Vinnytsia region, 3,000 individuals of Red Book fish died, including a unique herd of Azov sturgeon.
On the night of October 3, 9 tons of Red Book fish died suddenly – beluga, Lena and Azov sturgeon, beluga hybrid (bester).
The police have started an investigation.
“On October 3, 2023, the Vinnytsia Fish Protection Patrol received information about the death of aquatic biological resources at the Ukrainian Caviar Berry aquaculture entity, where sturgeon are grown.
The incident occurred near the city of Ladyzhyn, Vinnytsia region (Ladyzhyn Reservoir),” – reports the fish patrol.

At the Ukrainian Caviar Berry farm, where sturgeon fish are grown, they are convinced that the cause of the fish’s death was the release of harmful substances into the waters of the Southern Bug.
“All sturgeon life stopped overnight. 9 tons of fish! We can’t stop the water pollution in the Southern Bug River. The huge tank on the river that used to grow our sturgeon now looks like a cesspool.” – they write on the Ukrainian Caviar Berry Facebook page.

At the aqua farm, they say that the farm has come a long way in ten years. Red Book fish were rescued in 2014, when there were battles near Mariupol.
Also, in 2022, at the beginning of a full-scale invasion, a large part of Azov sturgeon and belugas were stolen from the farm, and this summer a hurricane broke the pontoon line. However, producers saved sturgeons.
“Usually, fish are killed to get caviar. But this was not our method. We obtained caviar by “milking” and the fish remained alive.
We have always said that we are creating the future, because sturgeons live for over a hundred years and our grandchildren will see the best harvest of our caviar. Unfortunately, not everything is in our power,” – wrote the owners of the farm.

The place of death has already been examined by employees of the DEI in Vinnytsia region, the State Production and Consumer Service in Vinnytsia region, the police and the prosecutor’s office.
Specialists of the department of instrumental and laboratory control took water samples to determine the content of pollutants.
The information was entered into the Unified Register of Pretrial Investigations. The investigation is ongoing.
“Today, the only unique herd of breeding Azov sturgeon was destroyed. We have some caviar from the last harvest left for you, but our hearts are broken.”, – the aqua farm workers add.
