What is tetanus?

Tetanus is a disease transmitted by contact with spores of Clostridium tetani bacteria that live in the soil and intestinal tract of animals.

You can get infected with tetanus when dirt gets into a wound or cut, as a result of animal bites or trauma with sharp objects, wood fragments.

Tetanus is not transmitted from person to person – only as a result of trauma, when the skin and mucous membranes are damaged, as spores of the pathogen can enter the wound.

The first symptoms of tetanus may appear within 3-21 days after infection.

They arise muscle spasmsan infected person becomes increasingly harder to swallowis developing headache, fever and excessive sweating.

Treatment must be started immediately, so if you suspect the symptoms of tetanus, contact your doctor immediately.

Tetanus can lead to serious complications. The risks of death from tetanus are high – from 10% to 70% depending on the treatment, age and state of health, say the Ministry of Health.

The only reliable way to protect against tetanus is vaccination.

Vaccination against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis according to the Vaccination Calendar is carried out at 2, 4, 6 and 18 months.

At 6 years and 16 years, you need to be vaccinated again. And from the age of 26, scheduled revaccination for adults is mandatory every 10 years.

Also, emergency tetanus immunoprophylaxis is indicated after injuries with a violation of the integrity of the mucous membranes and skin, some burns, childbirth or abortion outside the hospital, animal bites, etc.

According to the Ministry of Health, there is a free vaccine in Ukraine: more than 294 thousand doses of AKDP vaccine (adsorbed pertussis-diphtheria-tetanus vaccine), more than 388 thousand doses of ADPm (with a reduced content of antigens) and 124.5 thousand doses of ADP.
