In Lviv, doctors fought for a year to save a 13-year-old boy’s leg from amputation after a road accident. Foreign doctors assured that he will not be able to walk and the only way out is amputation of the foot.
However, Lviv specialists managed to grow new skin for the child and strengthen it with stem cells, the hospital reported.
13-year-old Mykola was involved in an accident a year ago: a bus ran over his leg at a pedestrian crossing.
Doctors note that after a severe injury, almost the entire foot of the boy was left without skin. The build-up process lasted three months.

After that, the boy got back on his feet and started walking. And in another two months – to run.
But the newly formed skin was very sensitive. As soon as Mykola began to move actively, blisters and new wounds formed on his foot. That is why orthopedic traumatologists decided to implant stem cells into the injured part of the leg.
According to doctors, this treatment was supposed to improve the overall condition of the skin, make it more elastic, and also strengthen its barrier function. After all, it is extremely important that the bone that grows with the foot does not press on the newly formed skin. Together with an Italian colleague – surgeon Roberto Brambillo – the doctors injected the patient with cells from his own fat tissue.
“We took adipose tissue from the child’s stomach. Through a special filter, mesenchymal stem cells were obtained from it and injected into those areas of soft tissues where we wanted to improve the local situation“, says the head of the department of orthopedics and traumatology, Galina Hachkevich.
The operation lasted an hour.
Mykola returned home the very next day.
Doctors assure: the condition of the skin on his foot will significantly improve in three months. Then he will be able to lead a maximally active life without constant bandages and visits to doctors.
