In the USA, a man died who was transplanted with a pig’s heart for the second time in the history of medicine. This happened almost six weeks after the operation.
This was reported in the Medical Center of the University of Maryland.
Lawrence Fawcett, 58, underwent a modified pig heart transplant on September 20.
He had the last stage of heart failure. Traditional transplantation to a man was contraindicated due to concomitant diseases.

For the first month after the operation, Fawcett had no signs of organ rejection. He did physical therapy and tried to start walking again.
However, a few days before his death, the man began to show signs of rejection.
“He knew that his time with us was limited and this was his last chance to do something for others. He never imagined that he would live with this for so long and provide so much data for the xenotransplantation program (transplantation from one species to another – ed.), – said Ann Fawcett, Lawrence’s wife.
Doctors plan to conduct a thorough analysis to identify factors that should be prevented in future transplants.
“Mr Fawcett’s last wish was that we make the most of this experience so that others can have a guaranteed chance of receiving a new heart when a human organ is not available.” said Bartley Griffith, a surgeon at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
This is the second case of xenotransplantation at this medical institution. For the first time, doctors transplanted a modified pig heart in 2022 to David Bennett, who lived two months after the operation.
We will remind you that a patient who underwent a heart-lung complex transplant for the first time in Ukraine died in Lviv.
