In Croatia, archaeologists have discovered an ancient city cistern near the Onofrio Fountain in the historic district of Dubrovnik.
During the replacement of the stone paving around the fountain, the remains of a large city cistern were found, which was located there from the 14th century until the water supply system was built in the city, reports Arkeonews.
The vault of the cistern was found only 30 centimeters below the paving stones.
Before that, the ancient public cistern was known only from archival documents. Its depth is about 5 meters.
The Onofrio Fountain is one of the most unique monuments of the city of Dubrovnik, designed by the Italian architect Onofrio della Cava. The fountain was built in 1438. At one time, he supplied water from several sources located 12 kilometers away.
It was also decorated with sculptures earlier, but in 1667 an earthquake occurred, as a result of which the fountain suffered severe damage and all that remained of it at that time were 16 carved masks from which water dripped.
“The first evidence of the existence of this public cistern dates back to the end of the 14th century. It is also known that at the end of the 15th century it came under the jurisdiction of the monastery of St. Clare, and thanks to this it was even restored“, the head of archaeological research Nela Kovacevich Bokaritsa told HRT.
According to archaeologists, before the cobblestones are laid again, the old cistern will be covered with geotextile. So it will be protected.
“We are currently working on changing the design of the project due to such shallow finds, which should be under a new coating that will ensure durability”– said Mihaela Skuric, director of the Dubrovnik HRT Institute of Restoration.
It will be recalled that recently in Italy during construction, the ruins of the villa of Pliny the Elder, which is about 2 thousand years old, were discovered.
