How to prepare for NMT in Ukrainian literature 2024: list of works and life hacks – Publications

The national multi-subject test in 2024 consists of three compulsory subjects: Ukrainian language, mathematics and history of Ukraine.

This year, Ukrainian literature was added to the elective subjects.

It is likely that applicants will need a multitest on Ukrainian literature for admission to humanities and specialties. Perhaps this subject will be added to the list of future marketers, suggests tutor Lidia Povorozniuk. So far, educational institutions have not put forward requirements for which NMT subjects must be taken for a particular specialty.

However, you should start preparing for the test in advance.

Together with tutor and teacher of Ukrainian language and literature Lidia Povoroznyuk, we talk about the NMT-2024 literature program, what works to read and how to prepare for the test.

What is included in the NMT program on Ukrainian literature 2024

In 2024, the NMT’s tasks on Ukrainian literature will be based on the same programs as the tests of the ZNO, Tetyana Vakulenko, head of the Ukrainian Center for the Evaluation of the Quality of Education, said in an interview with “UP.Zhyttia”.

“The only thing is that the testing of these subjects was not conducted in a computer format before. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to the fact that these will be tasks demonstrated on the screen”she added.

The NMT program on Ukrainian literature consists of:

• works of oral folk creativity;
• ancient Ukrainian literature;
• literature of the end of the 18th – beginning of the 20th century;
• literature of the 20th century;
• works of Ukrainian emigrant writers;
• works of modern literature.

In addition to works, test participants you also need to know the theory of literature: genres and literary families.

“It is worth remembering this while reading the works. There is no point in learning the theory separately, it must be reinforced. You should know that these two works are novels, and these two are plays”says the tutor.

In addition, need orient yourself in basic dates, namely periods. Because at school, the subject “Ukrainian literature” is rather the history of Ukrainian literature. Works are studied chronologically, not thematically, the expert explains.

“Accordingly, the NMT test program tests knowledge of these chronological frameworks. We must understand that Hryhoriy Skovoroda is a baroque writer, and Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi is a modern writer.

So you need to understand periodization, and it often helps here if people also make history, which is mandatory this year“, the tutor adds.

According to her, it is also necessary to know the basic biography of the authors, in particular, the pseudonyms of the authors and how others called this person (for example, Marusya Churai is the “Ukrainian Sappho” or “the girl from the legend”).

What works from Ukrainian literature should be read before NMT

“UP.Zhyttia” has compiled a list of works that must be read in order to complete the NMT of Ukrainian literature. Some of them can be read online or listened to in audio format.

Oral folk art

Despite the fact that the vast majority of tasks are designed to reproduce information, there is no need to memorize poems, says the expert. It is enough to know their main content and characteristics.

Hint: if a poem covers historical events or famous figures, it is always a historical song.

Ancient Ukrainian literature

The literature of the ancient period can be difficult to understand, but you should always remember the main thing in the work: characters, places and main events.

For example, in the works of Skovoroda, special attention should be paid to morals, and in the passages of “Tales..” to the events taking place.

Literature of the late 18th and early 20th centuries

According to Lidia Povoroznyuk, if the goal is to pass the NMT on Ukrainian literature with the maximum score, then you need to read the works in their entirety and pay attention to the main details.

“At ZNO-2020, applicants were puzzled by an electric fly swatter. In the task, it was necessary to establish the correspondence between the episodes of the same work. An electric fly swatter was discussed in the work “Mina Mazaylo”, it was the main character’s invention, which he talked about in one phrase. But this detail was not in the abridged version of the work”, said Lidia Povoroznyuk.

The tutor also advises paying special attention to the main characters from both great works and poems. In the latter, it is also important to remember artistic devices, such as metaphor, epithets or personification. Each artistic medium can be reinforced for yourself with several examples, this will help to remember not only them, but also the content of the work.

“Allocate more time to the formation of the “passport of the work”. These can be standard plates, comics or sketchbooks. You will have to go back to them before the test itself to refresh what you read in your head”, – emphasizes the tutor.

In addition, the work must be interesting to the reader, otherwise nothing will be remembered, says Lidia Povorozniuk. If reading is difficult, you can try listening to audiobooks, watching visualizations, or even reviews of works.

For example, “The Kaidash family” is staged in many theaters. It can also be a way to familiarize yourself with the work. However, it is worth considering that some details may be omitted.

How to prepare for the NMT in Ukrainian literature

Define your goal

It is worth preparing for the multitest depending on the goal that the applicant sets for himself, a confident tutor.

“If the NMT in literature falls on the applicant suddenly, then it is worth making a list of texts to understand which great novels he will not have time to read. Conditionally “City”, “Tiger Hunters” or “Do the oxen roar like the manger is full”, – emphasizes Lidia Povorozniuk.

If time is short, you can either listen to long works in audio format, or read abridged – and write down the key points, the expert advises.

Create a “passport” for each work

“Allow more time to form the “passport of the work”. These can be standard plates, comics or sketchbooks. You will have to go back to them before the test to refresh your mind.” – emphasizes the teacher of Ukrainian language and literature.

According to her, the entrant needs to know from each work:

• list of all characters;
• what the characters looked like;
• how the author describes the character of the characters;
• in which place and when the events develop.

“In fact, all proper names that occur in the text should be written down somewhere. These are the names of characters, names of places, rivers or cities mentioned in the work.

For example, you need to know that Stepan Radchenko sailed the Dnieper, not some other river.”– emphasizes the tutor.

“Passport” can be formed in any order. Ms. Lydia also says that you can use ready-made visual guides, where you can creatively describe the works you read and keep the main points.

Collect a “quote bank”

When preparing for NMT, you need to pay attention to important quotes, which the author uses in the text to describe the characters or the place where the events take place.

If you are reading the text in electronic format, it is convenient to copy and collect the quotations separately so that you can review them before the exam and remember the key events.

Particular attention should be paid to quotes about the appearance and character of the characters.

“It is not enough to simply remember that Motrya is an expressive woman. You need to know exactly how the author talks about it in the text.” – adds Lidia Povorozniuk.

Reinforce what you’ve learned with movie adaptations, audiobooks, and reviews

It is not worth preparing for the NMT in Ukrainian literature based only on the screen adaptation of the work, because it does not convey 100% of the text, but only a general understanding of the content.

“That’s why you can do it to consolidate the material and to make the work evoke some emotions in the reader. Without reading, you can get a passing grade or even an average. But if there is a high bar, then you need to prepare responsibly, read and study all the works in their entirety.”– sums up the reetitor.

Take online tests

According to Lidia Povorozniuk, in the tasks of the literature test, the main emphasis is on reproducing information and memorizing facts.

It is important to know the characters, description, characteristics, genres and chronology. And key questions are built around this.

Therefore, for good preparation, it is worth periodically taking online tests of previous years.

The Ukrainian Center for Evaluation of the Quality of Education has already published demonstration versions of the 2024 tests in all subjects and Ukrainian literature in particular.
