The Kharkiv National Pedagogical University named after Skovoroda and the Kharkiv National University named after Karazin will not be merged, despite the fact that the government considered such a possibility.

This was announced by Minister of Education Oksen Lisovyi at a briefing in Kharkiv on February 15, writes Ukrinform.

According to him, the decision is related to the profile of the university.

“It was decided to give the opportunity to work (Skovoroda KhNPU, – ed.) further autonomously. In particular, this is related to the percentage of specialized employment of teacher graduates. And with the vision offered to us by the university management regarding further development… The university assured , which will focus on training teachers, including special pedagogy,” the minister said.

Oksen Lisovyi added that the university will focus on its branch specifics in order to continue the training of specialists.

He added that branch universities should not expect unification, and the Ministry’s decision to unify universities “does not mean the end of their existence.”

We will remind you that at the end of 2023, the MES considered the possibility of joining the Kharkiv National University named after Frying pans to KhNU named after Karazin. Then the management of the pedagogical university spoke against it.

Earlier, we reported that the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports is planning to reduce the number of universities in Ukraine, in particular, due to the demographic crisis.

“Relying only on demography, which does not take into account the indicators of migration related to the war, we see a constant decrease in the number of people who were born on the territory of Ukraine 17 years ago.

By 2033, we will have approximately 300,000 graduates, and this is a figure that provides for the return of territories not yet controlled by Ukraine,” said Deputy Head of the Ministry of Education and Culture Mykhailo Vinnytskyi.

He also outlined the criteria for consolidation of higher education institutions.

In his opinion, in cities with a population of 100 to 350 thousand people, no more than two universities should be maintained.
