Anti-prize “Academic indecency”: laureates of 2023

In Ukraine, the winners of the anti-prize “Academic indignity of 2023” were determined. They were defined in eight categories.

Their names were announced on I-UA.TV.

In the commentary of “UP. Life”, the organizers of the anti-prize said that this year the competition was high in almost every nomination. Educators actively proposed candidates, and the results were mostly not clear until the end of the voting.

“We hope that the wide publicity of cases of violation of academic integrity and the fair punishment of academic scoundrels will serve as a signal to society about the inadmissibility of plagiarism, falsification, fabrication, dissemination of pseudoscience, and cover-up of dishonest scientists, publications, and universities.” – says Svitlana Blagodyeteleva-Vovk, the organizer of the “Academic Dishonesty of the Year” award, the coordinator of the Dysergate anti-plagiarism initiative.

“Plagiarist 2023”

The “winner” in this nomination was the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Oxen Lisovyi. The plagiarism in his candidate’s thesis was exposed even before he was appointed to the post.

He took second place Bohdan Buyak, rector of the Ternopil National Pedagogical University named after V. Hnatyuk, who was also exposed for plagiarism in his doctoral dissertation.

Doctor of Medical Sciences came third in the ranking Victoria Petrushenkowhich passed off someone else’s experimental data as its own.

“Forger 2023”

Victoria Petrushenko was also called the “falsifier of the year” due to changing the names of diseases in her dissertation (she changed pancreatitis to pancreonecrosis). 60% of votes were cast for awarding her this title.

Two nominees took second place with 10.6% of votes each:

  • Savchenko spouses from the Faculty of Construction and Transport of the Sumy National Agrarian University (for falsification of the educational process and plagiarism);
  • employees of the Sumy National Agrarian University Oleksandr Savchenko, Lyudmila Tsyganenko and Valery Zhmailov (for falsification of the educational process and official forgery).

“Pseudo-scientist 2023”

In the “Pseudo-scientist 2023” nomination, he won with 38.7% of the votes channel 2+2. He is accused of “systematic and large-scale dissemination of various pseudo-scientific fakes and talented manipulation of the texts of the Western mass media on scientific topics.”

“Toxic Rector 2023”

The creators of the anti-award note that a real competition between “supporters” of the candidates took place in this nomination this year.

More than a quarter of the academic community that took part in the voting cast their votes in favor Maksym Lutskyi, rector of the National Aviation University. He is blamed for the collapse of the university.

He got the second place and thirteen votes less Volodymyr Bugrov, rector of Kyiv National University named after T. Shevchenko, whom the public considers the most creative rector regarding violations.

He took third place with 17% of the votes Stanislav Nikolayenko – rector of the National University of Bioresources and Nature Management of Ukraine. He earned the “anti-mark” as an exposed plagiarist and a candidate for the permanent leadership of the university.

“Posipaka 2023”

This nomination honors state bodies and employees who, by their actions or inactions, support academic dishonesty.

So, this year, an official from higher education was recognized as the main “Posipaka”. Mykhailo Vynnytskyi. He received the anti-premium for a set of merits that allowed his career to reach its peak.

The second place received 30.6% of the votes National Agency for Quality Assurance of Higher Education – “for bureaucratically playing along with plagiarists, prolonging the terms of complaints and creating a warm place for educational officials who “chop cabbage” on accreditations to ensure their increased salaries.”

The third place was awarded to the judge of the Kharkiv District Administrative Court Yuriy Suprunwho made a decision in favor of the plagiarist Kaganovskaya, prohibiting NAMELY consideration of the facts of plagiarism in her doctoral dissertation

“Scandal 2023”

It was called the most unacceptable event of 2023 appointment of exposed plagiarist Oksen Lisovoy for the position of Minister of Education and Science. Almost 30% of votes were cast for this.

The second place in the nomination was received adoption of changes to the legislation by the Cabinet of Ministerswhich allowed the plagiarists Lisovoy and Babak to abandon their false plagiarized dissertations and remain in their positions.

He occupies the third step project of legalization of esoteric education in Ukraine.

“Special Council 2023”

“Victory” won with 50.7% of votes in this nomination Kharkiv National Pedagogical University named after Frying panswho created several “one-time special councils” in which plagiarists were protected.

The specialized scientific council was also noted Vinnytsia National Medical University named after M. I. Pirogovin which they already defended four plagiarized dissertations, as well as a specialized academic council Zaporizhzhia National Universitywhich “did not notice” the plagiarism in Pavlo Yevdokymov’s PhD thesis.

It will be recalled that the president of Harvard University resigned after accusations of plagiarism.
