Canceling absenteeism and changing majors during studies: the government proposes changes in higher education

On October 20, the Cabinet of Ministers proposed a draft law on the reform of higher education in Ukraine for consideration by the Verkhovna Rada.
According to the document, education seekers will have “more freedom of action”, said Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov and Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lisovyi.
According to the ministers, the draft law “will optimize higher education in Ukraine and bring it closer to European standards.”
The document proposes to allow students of higher education to:
Regulate the term of study

According to the draft law, students studying under a contract will be able to regulate the term of study.
For example, to accelerate studies and complete a bachelor’s degree in three years instead of four, or to obtain a degree in 6 years.
“This will help you create a convenient schedule if you work or want to pay more attention to certain subjects“Fedorov noted.
According to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), the number of study credits will increase from 60 to 30-80 per year.
Choose a specialty during your studies

The draft law proposes to implement interdisciplinary educational programs for bachelors.
From yes, after the first or second year of study, the student will be able to choose or change the specialty in the field they entered.
Study remotely

According to the draft law, starting in 2024, it will not be possible to obtain a higher education in the correspondence form of education.
Instead, it is proposed to introduce a remote form.
“External form of education – Soviet rudiment of education“, Mykhailo Fedorov noted.
Spend more time in the auditoriums
According to Mykhailo Fedorov, from now on the number of hours in lectures or practical classes will be determined.
Currently, the number of hours of study in classrooms has not been determined.
Choose courses for specialties
For regulated majors (law, medicine, military service, and nuclear power), the number of elective courses a student can take will be reduced.
At the same time, they will be increased for non-regulated specialties (philology, finance, cybernetics, etc.).
