Director, stage designer and scenographer Davyd Petrosyan became the new chief director of the National Academic Ukrainian Drama Theater named after Maria Zankovetska.

Petrosyan, who has been the director of the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater since November 2017, won the competition. It was held in Lviv on October 20, the press service of the theater reported.

The competition for the position of chief director of the Zankovetska Theater was announced almost two weeks ago – on October 5. Candidates had to submit to the competition committee their vision of the theater’s history and understanding of the current creative state in which the collective is, proposals for its development and a repertoire plan for one theater season.

In addition to Petrosyan, the director of the theater named after Maria Zankovetska applied for the position Ihor Bilyts.

Petrosyan has already managed to show the Lviv audience his first performance. As a guest director, he staged the story “Land” by Olga Kobylyanska. With this production, the people of Zankiv opened the 106th theater season.

Petrosyan studied at the Kyiv National University of Theater, Cinema and Television named after Karpenko-Kary (workshop of Volodymyr Sud’in). He also studied at the acting faculty in Oleg Shavarskyi’s workshop.

In addition to his work at the Franko Theater, Petrosyan founded the Practicum Theater, was the production director of the Kyiv Academic Drama Theater in Podil, staged a young audience at the Kyiv Academic Theater in Lypki, and the “Roof” CSM.

Among his most famous plays: “Lord of the Flies” based on the novel by William Golding, “Buna” based on the play by Vera Makova, “Cassandra” based on the poem by Lesya Ukrainka, “The Visit” based on the play by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, “Oedipus the King” based on Sophocles. In 2018, he also staged “The Earth” on the chamber stage of the Franko Theater.

In June of this year, the acting artistic director of the theater named after Maria Zankovetska was appointed Maxim Golenko. At that time, he was the chief director of the Odesa Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater named after Vasyl Vasylko.

Then the Director of the Directorate of Culture and Arts of the Ministry of Culture Iryna Chuzhinova reported that Golenko will remain in the status of acting until the MKIP makes changes to Article 21 of the Law “On Culture”, which provides for election to such positions through competition.

Golenko replaced him in this position Andrii Matsyak, who stayed in this position for five years. At the end of his tenure, Matsyak had a conflict with the team, because he did not renew the contracts with the main director Fedor Strygun and the actress Taisia ​​Lytvynenko.
