Doctors removed a neoplasm inside the bone of a 6-year-old boy, and then closed the “hole” with the help of a rib.

The tumor, which grew in the large tibia, caused the child unbearable pain and could stop the growth of the leg, told doctors of the First Medical Association of Lviv in social networks.

A boy from the Lviv region named Matvii had been ill since the autumn. He was playing in the yard and hit his right leg. Since then, the limb began to hurt.

“However, Matviyko admitted this to his parents only a few weeks after the blow, when swelling had already appeared on his lower leg. The parents immediately consulted a doctor.

On the x-ray, it was clear to the naked eye that changes had occurred in the bone. But then the doctors did not detect any acute surgical disease.” – say the doctors.

Over time, the pain in the leg worsened and the swelling increased and reddened, so the parents took their son to a hospital in the city. After the CT diagnosis, doctors preliminarily diagnosed a benign bone tumor.

The neoplasm arose at the site of slaughter and grew not outside, but inside the bone. At the time of the visit to the surgeons, the tumor reached 6 cm.

“The pain felt by Matviyko became unbearable. After all, a large tumor blocked the bone marrow canal and increased the pressure in it. It was difficult for the boy to step on his leg.”, they say in the hospital.

The limb could even stop growing, because the tumor was located close to the growth zone of the bone. The operation was necessary.

The surgeons managed to completely remove the tumor, but a hole formed in its place, which had to be closed.

“To artificially connect the bone, we used the boy’s eleventh rib. It belongs to the floating and has the ability to repair itself. So we sealed the defect with the patient’s own bone chips.

We managed to simultaneously remove the tumor and eliminate the defect that arose as a result of its removal.” – said the medical director of St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital, surgeon Oleksandr Kalinchuk.

The operation lasted about two hours and went well. Currently, the little patient is recovering from the operation, and is preparing to go to the first grade in the fall.

We will remind you that last year, for the first time in western Ukraine, a boy with cancer was transplanted with a femur printed on a 3D printer.

Also, for the first time in Cherkasy, a bone marrow transplant was performed from one child to another.

And recently, Lviv doctors transplanted a bone from the lower leg to the jaw for the first time without the help of foreign colleagues.
