The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance has concluded that the Arch of “Friendship of Nations” in Kyiv is subject to complete dismantling, despite its recent renaming as the Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian People.

UINP specialists notedthat the building belongs to the symbols of Russian imperial policy, reports Interfax-Ukraine.

“The Arch of Friendship of Peoples, located in Khreschaty Park of Kyiv, dedicated to events related to the implementation of Russian imperial policy and its glorification (installed in 1982 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the formation of the USSR and the 65th anniversary of the October Revolution of 1917), belongs to symbols of Russian imperial policy and is subject to complete dismantling”– it is stated in the conclusions of the expert commission.

The Institute says that despite the renaming, the monument “represents Soviet ideologues and connotations” and therefore poses a threat to Ukraine’s national security.

It will be recalled that the former “Arch of Friendship of Peoples” in the capital on the territory of Khreshchaty Park was opened as part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the creation of the USSR in 1982. In addition to the arch itself, part of the composition was a Soviet monument with two “proletarians”, a Ukrainian and a Russian.

On May 14, 2022, the Kyiv City Council decided to decommunize the Arch of Friendship of Peoples and renamed it the Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian People, and the monument under it was dismantled. By the way, during the disassembly, the head of the figure of the Russian man was cut off, which provoked a wave of memes on the Internet.
