Drinking alcohol increases the risk of cancer – study
[ad_1]
Scientists have found that giving up alcohol can reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, including those of the oral cavity and esophagus.
The results of the study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) were published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
IARC classifies alcoholic beverages as carcinogenic, that is, those that cause cancer. But it is not about alcohol itself, but the substance contained in it – acetaldehyde. It is toxic. Therefore, stopping the use of alcohol can reduce the risk of cancer of the oral cavity and esophagus, say scientists.
Research shows that people who have given up alcohol for several years have a better chance of staying healthy longer.

As for other types of cancer, the data are contradictory. In a study of mortality from colorectal cancer, scientists did not find clear links between giving up alcohol and reducing the risk.
“The working group concluded that there is limited evidence that reducing or stopping alcohol consumption reduces the risk of colorectal cancer.says the study.
The scientists also concluded that the evidence for a link between alcohol consumption and the development of breast cancer is questionable. However, they emphasize that the effect of alcohol on female hormones is beyond doubt.
“WITHan association between alcohol cessation and breast cancer risk is plausible, but may be limited to hormone receptor-positive tumors.
Considering several studies with analyzes stratified by hormone receptor status, the working group concluded that there is limited evidence that reducing or stopping alcohol consumption reduces the risk of breast cancer.” – scientists emphasize.
The researchers point out that giving up alcohol does not guarantee that you will not get cancer. However, it can help reduce the risk of it occurring.
We will remind you that a study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the World Health Organization, conducted in 2021, also proved that even small doses of alcohol increase the risk of developing cancer.
