The Zamoskvoretsky Court of Moscow has extended the term of arrest of film director Zhena Berkovich and playwright Svetlana Petriychuk until March 10. They are accused of inciting terrorism for the award-winning play about Russian women who left for Syria to become the wives of terrorists.
FSB expertise and documents on the condition of Berkovich’s daughters were added to the case materials, the correspondent of “Mediazona” reports. According to the director’s lawyer Ksenia Karpinskaya, the text of the examination says that “Islamic ideology” is identical to terrorism.
A criminal case on the public justification of terrorism against Berkovych and Petriychuk was initiated in early May, and they have been in pretrial detention since the same month. They face up to 7 years in prison. They deny guilt. Well-known cultural figures spoke in their support.
In 2022, the play about Islamists was awarded the most prestigious Russian theater award, the Golden Mask. Berkovych said that during the preparation of the performance at the “Daughters of SOSO” theater, she used real stories of Russian women who left for Syria, court materials regarding them, consulted with Islamic clerics and Russian law enforcement agencies.
