The Omicron COVID strain has mutated to such an extent that it is mostly a common respiratory disease and does not cause severe oxygen dependence.

However, it is still dangerous for some categories of people, virologist Alla Myronenko said during a briefing at “Media Center Ukraine”.

According to her, from the end of 2021 to the beginning of 2022, “Omicron” actually displaced other COVID strains, including “Delta” and “Alpha”.

“Now there is only Omicron, and many of them are circulating at the same time sub-variants. But, fortunately, he has changed. Many mutations have accumulated in its adhesion protein, a surface protein with which the virus attaches itself to the cell and can penetrate it.

Now “Omicron” does not cause heavy oxygen dependence, as was the case with previous versions. It usually runs like a common respiratory disease.” – said the virologist.

At the same time, according to Alla Myronenko, “Omicron” remains dangerous for risk groups: people with pathologies and people over 60 years old.

Earlier, the Minister of Health Viktor Lyashko reported that the new subspecies of the Omicron “Pirola” COVID strain does not lead to complications.
