The patrol police urges motorists to prepare for a change in weather conditions, because a significant drop in temperature, snow and ice are forecast in Ukraine in the coming days.

“Who hasn’t had time to prepare yet – do it now. Winter tires, winter washer, check the battery, make sure you have means for cleaning the car from snow and ice (a small folding shovel – it can also be useful, throw it in the trunk)”, – calls the first deputy chief of the Department of the Patrol Police of Ukraine Oleksiy Biloshitskyi.

He also debunked several myths about winter tires.

Myth 1: “When my grandfather/father drove “Muscovites” and “Zhigulys”, there were no winter tires and everything was normal”

Oleksiy Biloshitsky denies this statement. According to him, they used to drive on the same tire both in summer and winter, because there were no alternatives.

“It’s the same as walking in wooden “shoes”, because once they were worn and there were norms. In fact, neither grandfather nor father would have refused greater comfort and safety if they had the opportunity. But it was not “, – says Biloshitskyi.

He also draws attention to the fact that the intensity of traffic and the number of cars used to be much smaller than now. There was more space and less chance of accidents on the road.

“However, our ancestors also had a lot of problems with snow and ice, no matter how skilled drivers and mechanics they were. And they “build up” the rubber when it wore out, and then this “build up” flew off in a whole layer just on the track. – reminds the official.

Myth 2: “Winter tires are the same as summer tires, and it’s all marketing”

According to a representative of the Patrol Police, the chemical composition of summer and winter tires differs: a summer tire is designed for higher temperatures and retains its properties precisely at high temperatures.

“When the temperature is less than 4-7 degrees above zero, the summer tire begins to “scoot”, lose its elasticity and traction potential. It simply freezes and turns into a rink.” – explains Biloshitskyi

At the same time, winter tires have a different chemical composition and do not lose their properties at low temperatures, so they have good grip on the road surface. In addition, they have a deeper tread.

Myth 3: “I’m such a good driver that I don’t need winter tires. Let those who can’t drive take them.”

“No matter how skillful a driver is, no one has yet defeated the laws of physics. The road grip on a summer tire is much worse at low temperatures. Hence the longer braking distance, at least. And a less skillful driver, but who has put on winter tires, will stop faster in an unexpected situation. And the “handsome fellow” will most likely drive into it, since he will have a longer braking distance.” – says the representative of the Patrol Police.

Myth 4: “You can drive an SUV with 4×4 and summer tires”

According to Oleksiy Biloshitskyi, in fact, heavy SUVs need winter “shoes”, just like other cars. And due to the large size and greater weight of the SUV, driving it on summer tires will resemble skiing down a mountain.

Myth 5. “You can save money and put winter tires only on the drive axle, and leave the other on the summer”

In fact, to achieve the effect, it is necessary to install winter tires on both axles, emphasizes Biloshitskyi.

“Even though they will give a little more traction on snow and ice, winter tires on only one axle can create much more trouble in some situations – the car will easily skid in those situations where it could maintain stability,” – Biloshitsky claims.
