Dutch scientists discovered that gas stoves emit nitrogen dioxide, which can provoke the development of bronchial asthma in children.
Scientists measured the air quality in 247 homes and found that the average level of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) was almost twice as high in the homes of people who cooked on a gas stove than in those who cooked on an electric stove, writes The Guardian.
The report, commissioned by energy efficiency group Clasp, measured NO2 levels in homes in seven European countries.
The scientists chose homes whose owners do not smoke cigarettes and which are far from major roads and factories to reduce exposure to other sources of pollution.

Exceeding the permissible levels of air pollution established by the WHO was recorded in every fourth house with gas stoves for cooking.
While there were no violations in any house where electric stoves were used.
“When cooking gas is burned, pollutants such as NO2 are released, which are harmful to the lungs and can cause inflammation of the respiratory tract.
Scientists have long known the connection between gas stoves and childhood asthma, although they have not proven a cause-and-effect relationship between them“, the report says.
So the scientists are recommending that governments change regulations on kitchen appliances, that companies stop manufacturing and installing gas stoves and ovens, and that consumers switch to electric stoves and ventilate kitchens with hoods and open windows.
