The Council did not support the draft law on the location of the National Military Memorial Cemetery

The Verkhovna Rada did not gather enough votes to pass in the first reading the draft law, which provides for the allocation of a plot of land for the National Military Memorial Cemetery in Gatny, in the Kyiv region. Previously, deputies supported the location of the cemetery in Bykivna.
According to Yaroslav Zheleznyak, a people’s deputy from the “Voice” faction, only 194 people’s deputies supported the document. Re-voting was also not supported.
According to him, with this draft law, they wanted to give the Cabinet of Ministers the opportunity to actually change the location of the cemetery.
“There was a very difficult discussion, because earlier, on May 2, the parliament, by a separate law No. 9240, had already determined the place for National Military Memorial Cemetery in “Bykivna”. But the draft law has not yet been signed, and is unlikely to be. And the main discussion will be precisely about where the location will be”Zheleznyak noted.

People’s deputy from the “European Solidarity” faction, Volodymyr Vyatrovych, explains that the parliament did not support this draft law, because it provided for the creation of the National Military Cemetery in Gatny. At the same time, the Verkhovna Rada had already passed a law on its location in Bykivna.
“At that time, 322 deputies voted for the law. This arrangement was supported by the families of the fallen heroes, who expected that they would be able to bury their relatives already this year.” Vyatrovych writes.

The draft law on the creation of the National Memorial Military Cemetery was adopted in 2022. However, there are still disputes about the place where it should be built.
In the spring of 2023, Kyiv City Hall allocated a plot of land in Bykivna for NVMK. This decision was supported by the families of the fallen soldiers. However, later in the “Bykivnyan Graves” reserve, it was announced that there may be old burials of victims of Stalin’s repressions in the Bykivnyan Forest. This would delay construction for a long time.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved a new site – near the Southern Cemetery in the Gatna community of the Fastiv district of the Kyiv region, not far from the village of Vita-Poshtova. Relatives of the fallen heroes are against such a decision.
