Geographical objects in Crimea will return their names in the Crimean Tatar language – the Ministry of Reintegration

Historical names in the Crimean Tatar language will be returned to geographic names in the temporarily occupied Crimea.

This was discussed at the meeting of the National Commission on the Crimean Tatar Language, the Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories reports.

The Crimean Tatar language will be used to denote toponyms of Turkic origin or historical Crimean Tatar names.

“The preparation of this decision continues for the implementation of the Law on Condemnation and Prohibition of Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policy in Ukraine and Decolonization of Toponymy.”

Mechanisms are currently being negotiated that will allow the use of toponym spelling using Latin graphics in media and scientific works”the message says.

Names will also be changed on road signs and when making maps in communication with cartographic service operators and services that serve such signs.

The National Commission instructed the Government to develop a relevant decision. This issue will be taken care of by the Ministry of Infrastructure together with the Ministry of Reintegration, the Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine to the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People and the Institute of National Remembrance.
