The star “psychotherapist” and co-host of the YouTube project “Podcast Therapy” Spartak Subbota became the hero of a high-profile investigation. Psychotherapist Ilya Poludyonny collected evidence of Subbota’s deception and fraud for 7 months – he published the results of the investigation on the Svydmi portal. The author claims that Spartak pretended to be a candidate of sciences for 5 years even before the defense of the thesis, lied about the regalia of a psychiatrist and a psychologist, as well as about publication in the authoritative Scopus database. The author suggests that Subbota may not have a medical education, and then his psychotherapy practice is considered a crime. The material also contains evidence of the seduction of female clients, unethical behavior and confusion of Spartak in therapy methods. “UP. Life” collected the main theses from the investigation about Spartak Subbota. Lies about regalia Since 2017, Spartak Subbota has publicly presented himself as a candidate of psychological sciences – 5 years before he officially obtained this degree. In 2021, the abstract of Spartak Subbota’s candidate’s dissertation was sent to the commission for perusal, at the end of the year he defended it, and only in April 2022, by order of the Ministry of Education and Science, he officially obtained the degree of candidate of psychological sciences. Prior to this Sabbath had to be called an aspirant or “acquirer”. In addition, in order to obtain a candidate’s degree, Subbota published in the scientific journal American Journal of Fundamental, Applied & Experimental Research, which is registered at the address of the church and mimics a foreign one. According to the investigation, this scientific journal was created in Ukraine, resides on Ukrainian servers, is managed by an editorial team of Ukrainians from Ukraine, but has a physical address in the USA. At this address is the rectory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Volodymyr, writes the author of the investigation. Vitaly Lunyov is the co-author of Spartak Subbota in two articles published in the “American Journal of…” magazine and the scientific supervisor of the candidate’s thesis. He is the co-founder of an “American” magazine, as well as a beneficiary of the allegedly “British” organization “Society for The Support of Publishing Initiatives and Scientific Mobility Limited (UK)”. In this “foreign” organization Spartak Saturday seems to work, but in fact this organization only rents a virtual office from a British company. Also, Ilya Poludyonny suspects that Spartak did not write his scientific papers independently, because his theses from articles are sometimes completely opposite to those voiced on podcasts. Spartak Subbota also claimed to be a psychiatrist, but the author of the investigation claims that this is a lie and the man does not have a medical education. Spartak called himself a cognitive-behavioral psychotherapist and a member of the Ukrainian Association of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. However, this is also manipulation, because currently he does not belong to the community of cognitive-behavioral therapists, does not have accreditation and has not been a member of the relevant association since 2019 – this was officially confirmed by the Ukrainian Institute of CBT. Name Psychologist and member of the National Psychological Association Artem Osypyan, with whom Spartak was friends and studied CBT, said that the name of the “star psychologist” is not Spartak, but Oleksandr. This was confirmed by a classmate of Spartak from the military lyceum in Boyarka, where he once studied. However, Spartak himself said that this is his real name, which is indicated in the birth certificate. Yes, the university is big, but at least there would be some points of contact. And I know from his colleagues that he behaved unethically with patients. They then received treatment from colleagues after him Galina Lysyana, a psychologist and a graduate of NMU, told “UP. Life”. Ilya Poludyonnyi also found people who confirmed that they studied with Spartak Subbota at the National Pedagogical University named after M. P. Drahomanov, majoring in Psychology, he really graduated with a full-time bachelor’s degree and his name was Alexander at the time. “Since we already know that the applicant was not Subbota Spartak Oleksandrovich, but rather Oleksandr Oleksandrovich Subbota, we begin to search for information on Google… We find such a match in the file, which is a list of applicants who entered the contract form of education in the specialty “Psychology” according to the educational and qualification level “bachelor” in 2009 at the NPU named after M.P. Dragomanov. The veracity of this document is proved by a simple fact – this file is on the website of the NPU named after M.P. Dragomanov itself,” – writes Ilya Poludyonny. That is, Oleksandr Oleksandrovich Subbota graduated from the Drahomanov University of Pedagogy with a bachelor’s degree, and then, according to him, he studied at a master’s degree in France. However, if this master’s degree exists, it still does not provide grounds for private practice, because, according to the investigation, it is not nostrified – that is, not recognized by Ukrainian legislation. “If Spartak Subbota only has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and has a non-Nostrified French education, it means that he not only pretended to be a psychiatrist and a medical psychologist all these years, but he also accepted clients as a psychologist and psychotherapist, which is illegal.” – writes Ilya. At the same time, if the investigator is wrong, Spartak Subbota can refute the accusation of lack of medical education and qualifications as a psychiatrist and medical psychologist. “It is enough to publish only two letters and eight numbers. The state register of education from EDEB contains all the information about the education of each person. You only need to know the data about the diploma. The author gives an example of how you can check his own information about education and provides data for such a check everyone willing,” Ilya writes. He urges Spartacus to make this information public. Sex with clients Artem Osypyan told the investigator that about 5 former clients of Spartak approached him with complaints about ethical violations. “One of these clients came to me, we already had several consultations, and at some point she told me that “You know, it is very difficult for me to trust psychologists, psychotherapists.” I began to delicately ask “Why?”. And she said “there was one psychologist , a psychotherapist with whom I had a good relationship, but then it became romanticized, and we already had such a romantic-sexual relationship,” the psychologist recounts. In this case, it was about Spartak. Connections with OPZZH The author of the investigation found that Spartak cooperated with the analytical research center “Seetarget”, which is associated with the hidden PR of political forces, in particular the banned “OPZH”. “Spartak Subbota only started working at the Institute of Cognitive Modeling at the end of 2019, but since the end of 2018, he has not only been active political life as a political psychologist, which is extremely contradictory to his answers in the interview with Serhiy Lykhovyda, and also worked at Seetarget,” the text says. Both organizations were seen in connection with the political party OPZZH. And Seetarget probably did not inform people about an objective sociological picture, but sought to influence it on the eve of the elections – that’s why it ended up on the list of pseudo-PR and pseudo-sociologists. I hope that Spartak will be convicted of fraud. Because his activities in recent years are a crime,” the psychologist wrote. Also, the “Vikhola” publishing house has already reacted to the stated facts. “Friends, today an article appeared in the mass media about one of our authors – Spartak Subbota. We asked Spartak to explain all the facts presented in the article. We will tell you more about our further actions later,” they wrote. Note that in the investigation, Spartak was mentioned as the author of the columns on “Ukrainian Pravda”. “UP” and “UP. Life” did publish Spartak Subbota’s columns, in which he presented himself as a psychotherapist and scientific director of the Institute of Cognitive Modeling.
