In Russian-occupied Mariupol, a monument to the artist Arkhip Kuindzhi, whose museum was looted at the beginning of the full-scale war, was demolished. The monument was erected back in 1984. It was located on Greek Square. This was reported in the Telegram channel of the Mariupol City Council. “This is yet another destruction by the Russians of the cultural fund of the city,” they wrote in the message. The report also noted that with the occupation, the Russians began to systematically destroy the cultural centers and monuments of Ukrainian Mariupol. The monument by Vasyl Polonik depicted the young Kuindzhi. Initially, the monument was located at the intersection of Metalurgiv Avenue and Shevchenko Boulevard, and was moved to Gretska Square in 1991. Also, on the morning of October 19, the occupiers dismantled the memorial to the victims of the Holodomor, erected in 2004 in the center of Mariupol. Crimea” (1898—1908). At the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Russian military destroyed the Kuindzhi Art Museum in Mariupol. There are almost 2,000 exhibits. Among them are paintings by Arkhip Kuindzhi himself. In particular, they stole the originals of three paintings by Arkhip Kuindzhi “Red sunset”, “Autumn” and “Elbrus”, paintings by Ivan Aivazovsky “Near the shores of the Caucasus”, Grigory Kalmykov “Archip Kuindzhi” and Mykola Dubovsky “Sea” and “Night on the Baltic Sea ” and the works of Tetyana Yablonska and Mykola Hlushchenko. Also, a bust of Arkhip Kuindzhi by sculptor Volodymyr Beklemishev was taken out of the museum. The artist’s canvases are in the collection of the Kyiv Art Gallery, the Kharkiv Art Museum. The painting “Red Sunset” is stored in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Thanks to the efforts of Ukrainian activists, the Metropolitan Museum recognized Arkhip Kuindzhi as a Ukrainian artist. Before this artist was considered Russian.
