How to assess your risk of cardiovascular diseases – explains the Ministry of Health

Heart disease can develop with age or due to hereditary predisposition, but these factors have a much smaller effect compared to the lifestyle a person leads.

Cardiovascular diseases – this is primarily a consequence of lifestyle, the Ministry of Health informs.

Most often, the development of cardiovascular diseases provokes:

  • smoking cigarettes and nicotine-containing products;
  • overweight – you can determine your own body index by following the link;
  • the level of total cholesterol and the level of low- and high-density lipoproteins outside the normal range;
  • high systolic (“upper”) and diastolic (“lower”) pressure (over 130 and over 80 mm Hg, respectively);
  • an unbalanced diet, in which processed products predominate and there are not enough whole foods (vegetables, cereals, fish, legumes, etc.);
  • alcohol abuse. Abuse is the consumption of more than one drink-sized glass per day.
  • lack of motor and training activity.

“If you have at least one of these risk factors, there are at least two things you can do: make a plan to change your lifestyle and consult a doctor. The doctor will assess your current state of health, prescribe tests and a treatment plan if necessary.” – the Ministry of Health emphasizes.

According to the Ministry of Health, during the week, an adult person should have about 150 minutes of moderate physical activity (quick walking, swimming, cycling on a relatively flat landscape, gardening) and at least 75 minutes of intense physical activity (dancing, jogging, rowing).

In addition, it is desirable to have strength training twice a week, the ministry adds.

There are also other risk factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases that do not belong to the lifestyle category.

At the Ministry of Health, they include:

  • loneliness, when a person lives alone and practically does not communicate by voice;
  • early menopause in women under 40;
  • post-traumatic stress disorder that interferes with social life.

If there is at least one risk factor for the development of heart disease, the ministry advises to consult a doctor.
