How to distinguish a cough with ARVI from whooping cough? They tell the Ministry of Health

A cough can be a symptom of various diseases – both ARVI (acute respiratory viral infection) and dangerous whooping cough.
The Ministry of Health told about the difference in symptoms.
A cough with ARVI is “wet”, that is, it produces mucus. After a coughing attack, relief is felt.
“A cough with SARS, especially bronchitis, can really last for weeks and months after recovery (at this time, the child can already go to school or kindergarten). But over time, the coughing attacks become easier, their duration becomes shorter, until they stop.” – they say in the ministry.
Whooping cough is a disease of the respiratory tract that is transmitted by airborne droplets.

In the beginning, it looks like a common cold. During the first two weeks, the cough is either absent or weak.
Characteristics of cough in whooping cough:
- dry;
- with protracted attacks that gradually become more severe;
- at the end of the attack, the well-being worsens, it becomes difficult to breathe;
- the face and lips may turn pale or blue;
- after an attack, you can hear a whistling sound when you inhale;
- attacks more often occur at night.
“Babies may not have a cough – but they may stop breathing for a short time, which can be seen by a blue face.” – the Ministry of Health notes.
Among the most frequent complications of whooping cough are pneumonia, encephalopathy (brain damage) and otitis (inflammation of the middle ear).
Whooping cough in an infant has a high probability of ending in death. That is why the ministry advises pregnant women and their family members to get revaccinated against whooping cough.
“For revaccination, a combined vaccine is used, which also protects against diphtheria and tetanus. When the child is 2 months old, he should receive the first dose of the vaccine against whooping cough, diphtheria and tetanus. For complete protection, three more doses will be required: at 4, 6 and 18 months”, – they say in the Ministry of Health.
