In India’s New Delhi, for the first time, authorities plan to “induce” rain to improve air quality in the city, which is the world’s most polluted capital and has been engulfed in smog (a mixture of fog, dust and pollutants) for a week.

The city has already closed all schools, stopped construction work and is going to introduce restrictions on the use of vehicles, Reuters reports.

According to Environment Minister Gopal Rai, depending on legal permission and weather conditions, the authorities will try to “induce” rain from November 20.

Rai added that a proposal prepared by experts on “inducing” rain will be presented to the Supreme Court in a few days.

I believe we can do at least the first pilot project“, the official said.

New Delhi’s Environmental Protection Agency said it plans to seed clouds with silver iodide to induce precipitation.

When storm systems pass through one of the project’s cloud-scattering areas, a solution containing a small amount of silver iodide is burned by ground-based generators or released from aircraft. Once in the cloud, silver iodide acts as ice-forming nuclei, contributing to the formation of snowflakes.

Previously, rains were “caused” in China, Indonesia and Malaysia.
