The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine reacted to the illegal destruction of a building in the historic part of Kyiv.

A statement was posted on the Ministry’s telegram channel, demanding to stop the demolition of the historic manor house on Reitarska Street, 37, which is located in the UNESCO world heritage buffer zone.

This is a direct violation of the Law of Ukraine “On the Protection of Cultural Heritage” and Article 37-2, which requires mandatory consideration of the recommendations of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee before carrying out work in the buffer zone of a world heritage site“, they emphasized in the statement.

The Ministry also reported that the meeting of the Expert Commission on Accounting of Cultural Heritage Objects of the Ministry of Education and Culture is currently underway, where the status of the monument on the street will be reviewed. Reitarska, 37.

It is obvious that the illegal works, which are continuing at the moment in parallel with the meeting, are being deliberately carried out with the aim of destroying the material structure of the historic Kyiv estate. It should be noted that the UNESCO World Heritage Committee did not approve such works, since the developer did not inform the Committee and did not receive any recommendations“, – wrote in MKIP.

On September 26, the co-founder reported on the illegal dismantling of the manor on Reitarska zranka NGO “Museum of Modern Art” Olga Balashova. She wrote that the developer is demolishing the estate using illegal documentation. Balashova reported that she had called the police.

At Reitarska Street, 37, the brutal dismantling of the monument, which was designed as such that it can be demolished using forged documents, is currently underway“, Balashova wrote.

Previously, UP.Zhyttia wrote about the problems of the Cultural Heritage Protection Department of the KMDA, which recently had a new head Marina Solovyova. In particular, Solovyova’s deputy is an activist Dmytro Perov noted that the specialized department and MKIP should cooperate in order to protect the historical buildings of Kyiv.

Also, Perov once again reminded that the destruction of historical buildings often occurs due to the lack of protection status of monuments. So, in August 2023, they destroyed a house on Yaroslavska Street, 13-b, and in April they tried to destroy the “House with Insects”, located on Volodymyrska Street, 93. It could become a victim of “new construction” – the activists managed to stop the demolition work, now it’s time is in court.
