In Kyiv, at the National Children’s Specialized Hospital of the Ministry of Health “Okhmatdit”, a 9-month-old child underwent a liver transplant with one-time correction of a heart defect.

The operation, which was carried out for the first time in Ukraine, lasted almost a day, the Ministry of Health and NDSL “Okhmatdyt” inform.

Patient Tatyanka was born in Ternopil in February 2023. Doctors diagnosed her with a congenital heart defect, which was discovered in her mother’s womb, as well as an illness that causes liver failure.

At 9 months old, Tatyanka had developmental disorders, each of which could be corrected at different times and in different ways. Simultaneous surgical intervention was risky, however, without surgery the girl had no chance of life.

“If we operate on a child with a certain interval on different days, it doesn’t matter that first, we multiply the risks of the operation, which are already there. If we operate on the heart first, there is a risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. If we operate on the liver, then there is a high probability of graft rejection.”– said Oleg Godik, transplant surgeon of “Okhmatdyt”.

According to the Ministry of Health, after a consultation of doctors, doctors decided to combine two operations – to perform a one-time correction of a heart defect and a liver transplant from a donor, who became the girl’s mother, Olga.

Heart surgery always requires the use of an artificial circulatory system. The disadvantage is that there is a high risk of heart failure in the postoperative period.

Therefore, we proposed to leave the central cannulation as an artificial blood circulation after the end of the main stage of heart surgery. This allows to reduce the volume of blood loss and to support the work of the heart during liver transplantation– said Andrii Vysotskyi, an anesthesiologist-reanimatologist.

It is noted that a similar variant of liver transplantation with one-time correction of a heart defect was performed in Ukraine for the first time. The operation lasted 23 hours.

At a certain moment, the question arose before the doctors – how exactly to operate? First the heart, then the liver, or vice versa?

After surgery, the child feels better. According to doctors, soon the girl will go home with her mother.
