On the territory of the Kyiv crematorium at the Baikovy cemetery, repair work has begun after criticism from the military.

Both farewell halls are planned to be put in order within two weeks, and full restoration is planned for 2024, reports the official portal of Kyiv.

“These are necessary operational works, as the criticism of the military regarding the appearance of the crematorium is fair.” – say the Kyiv City State Administration.

The restoration of the crematorium was planned back in 2021, but the repair was postponed.

Last week, a video spread on social networks, in which the head of the Azov Patronage Service, Olena Tolkachova, showed the conditions in the crematorium and demanded that the local authorities start repairs.

“Here we say goodbye to our fallen heroes. Since 2014, we have been trying to bring the crematorium to a decent state. Here (at the entrance – ed.) we are faced with the fact that the boys can trip, fall, drop the coffin. Brothers follow the coffin , the guys who are in the Kyiv hospital come. Here they can neither walk nor pass (in a wheelchair – ed.). We bring the carts right into the hall, we bring the guys on crutches by the arms.

In winter, snow falls on your head here, water flows, broken windows under the ceiling. There is a drain here that does not work. This is unworthy of the boys and girls who died for our Motherland. We have been waiting for the third week after we were promised that the repair work would begin.”– said Olena Tolkachova, showing the entrance to the building and the farewell hall.

Petro Panteleev, deputy chairman of the KMDA, explained why the repair of the crematorium was delayed.

“The buildings of the crematorium were built back in the 1970s, that is, they are almost half a century old. Of course, they need a complete renovation, which we planned to do in 2021. However, the buildings were recognized as objects of cultural heritage, because they were created according to a unique project. This significantly complicates any repair work.

Because state regulations require comprehensive restoration, which will be accompanied by scientific research. And we have already completed a number of procedural and research works in order to carry out the restoration next year.”Panteleev said.

The farewell halls are currently undergoing ongoing renovations to improve their appearance.

“Criticism of the military, for whom we have great respect and gratitude, is objective. And we are now rectifying the situation as quickly as possible – clean, paint, replace some elements. That is, everything that will not affect the further restoration, but will improve the appearance of the premises where Ukrainian soldiers are said goodbye.” – says the deputy head of the KMDA.

The repair process is expected to take up to two weeks. Halls will be repaired alternately, and budget funds will not be allocated for this, adds the KMDA.

The current renovation in the farewell halls is planned to be completed in 2 weeks, and the full restoration should take place next year
