In Ecuador, a 76-year-old woman who was supposed to be buried turned out to be alive: she started knocking on the coffin during her own wake. Retired nurse Bella Montoya was hospitalized on June 9 after suffering a suspected stroke, The Associated Press and The Guardian reported. The woman had a cardiorespiratory arrest – cessation of breathing and heart work. She did not respond to resuscitation measures, so the doctor on duty pronounced her dead. The family took the body to the funeral home, and then held a wake, when suddenly all the guests heard strange sounds. About five hours after the wake, the coffin started making noises. My mother was wrapped in sheets and was fighting against the coffin, and when we approached, we saw that she was breathing hard,” the man recalls. Relatives took Bella to a hospital in the central town of Babahoyo. Ecuador’s Minister of Health reported that she is in intensive care. However, doctors do not give relatives hopeful forecasts. An investigation was launched at the medical facility that confirmed the death of a living woman.
