The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy reacted to the scandal surrounding the participation of Russian pianist Stanislav Korchagin in this year’s Volodymyr Horovyts International Competition for Young Pianists. The organizing committee also commented on the scandal, calling those who disagree haters. MKIP stated that the copyright for the concept of the Horovyts competition belongs to a charitable organization, and the Ministry and the KMDA supported its holding in Kyiv. They added that in 2023 and 2022, the ICIP will not finance the competition in Ukraine due to the war. “Last year, the World Federation of International Music Competitions offered to support the Horovyts competition under the conditions of its impossibility to be held in Ukraine. Namely, to hold and finance a separate competition, which will bear the same name, but in Geneva and entirely at the expense of donor funds. We, as MKIP, thanked for this opportunity, but were not involved in the process of forming the jury, nor in the selection criteria of the participants. Accordingly, we were not informed who exactly would participate or who had already been selected to participate in the competition, made it to the finals or semi-finals “, the Ministry of Culture commented. Also, the day before, representatives of the organizing committee of the Horovyts competition called everyone who was outraged by the participation of a Russian, ex-military man in the competition, haters. And they added that the information about the potential participation of the Russians was not hidden. “A month ago, on the Ukrainian YouTube channel of Antin Zhukova, an interview with Iryna Polstyankina, the President of the IBF Volodymyr Horovyts Competition, was published, in which all the nuances of the future competition, which was being prepared by the World Federation of International Music Competitions in Geneva, were discussed. An inquisitive viewer can compare the dates and the stated theses and make sure that no information about the potential participation of the Russians – precisely the potential one, because at the time of the recording of the program the submission of applications for the competition was ongoing – was not hidden,” the message says, which caused an even greater wave of indignation.
