Parajanov was rehabilitated 50 years after the director’s trial

The National Commission for Rehabilitation at the request of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance (UINP) rehabilitated a Ukrainian film director of Armenian origin Serhiy Paradzhanov. This was announced by the head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance on the occasion of the artist’s 100th birthday Anton Drobovich.

“We have truly historic news – Serhiy Paradzhanov has been rehabilitated! Half a century has passed since his trial, but now, even in the legal sense, justice is triumphant. It is a pleasure to write about this on the centenary of the birthday of the key author of Ukrainian poetic cinema“, he wrote Anton Drobovich.
According to the head of the institute, the film director’s name was rehabilitated at the last meeting of the national rehabilitation commission on December 20, 2023. The Office of the President of Ukraine and Ukrainian human rights defenders, in particular the Ukrainian Helsinki Union for Human Rights, supported the consideration of this case.

“Thanks to them [членам комісії, – прим.] historical truth overcomes oblivion and repression, and there is also hope that other complex and high-profile cases of Ukrainian dissidents who were tried in the USSR under both political and fabricated general criminal articles will be examined later“, added the head of the UINP.
100 years since Parajanov’s birthday

Serhii Paradzhanov produced a number of films such as “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” and “Pomegranate Color”starting the wave of Ukrainian poetic cinema with them.
The premiere of the film “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” took place on September 4, 1965 in the Kyiv cinema “Ukraine”. At this show Ivan Dzyuba took the stage with a speech about mass political repressions, and Vasyl Stus uttered his famous “Who is against tyranny and dictatorship – please stand up!”.
As stated on the page of the Ukrainian Communist Party of Ukraine, in June 1966 the Resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine “On serious shortcomings in the organization of film production at the Dovzhenko Kyiv Film Studio” appeared. Then the criticism was about the tapes “Well for the thirsty” authorship Ivan Drach and Yuriy Illenko, “Check your watches” Lina Kostenko and Yuri Ilyashenkoas well as the script Serhiy Paradzhanov to the movie “Kyiv frescoes”.
In 1973, Parajanov was sentenced to 5 years of strict regime camps under the article “for homosexuality”. However, everyone understood that he was actually being tried for supporting dissidents, because the verdict contained articles “for speculation” and “for Ukrainian nationalism.”
