Serhiy Mikhalchuk – a world-renowned cinematographer and photographer. He has completed about 40 films (“Mamai”, “Dovbush”, “V. Sylvestrov”, “Guide”, “Wild Field”), four of which were nominated for the “Oscar”. After the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, he voluntarily joined the ranks of the Armed Forces.

Konstantin and Vlada Liberovy – a couple of photographers from Odessa. After February 24, wedding photo sessions and master classes were changed to work in the hottest spots of the war. Their photos have traveled all over the world, they are published by the largest international media – BBC, Welt, Vogue, New York Times.

In addition, the executive producer of the project Alina Krasnyanska presented the art book of the same name. It contains photos and quotes of the artists who participated in the project: Serhiy Mykhalchuk and the spouses Vlada and Kostiantyn Liberovyh, as well as the band “Antitila”, actor and director Akhtem Seitablayev, kobzar and bandurist Taras Kompanichenko, writer Serhiy Zhadan, film director Mykhailo Illenko, actor Dmytro Linartovych , cinematographer Yaroslav Pilunskyi, actors Oleksiy Tritenko and Yevhen Nyschuk.

Konstantin and Vlada Liberov, who came to the opening of the exhibition straight from the front, said that like everyone else, they hoped to the last that the invasion would not last long, so they tried to show the bright side of the war in their photographs, trying to give hope to Ukrainians.

After some time, we realized that this war is too romanticized and it does not benefit the front and Ukrainian society. Now, on the contrary, we cover all the horrors of war. We want to imprint this pain, sweat, blood, make it so that it will never happen again“, Konstantin shared.

We record, we testify, we try to see and capture the moments that happen to us, so as not to lose our self-respect and dignity. Sometimes the world is terribly disappointing: when you try to talk about pain, about losses, and the world perceives it through the prism of stereotypes, clichés and political conjuncture. We are doomed to explain it!” – noted Serhiy Zhadan, who also attended the presentation.

Complex “Culture vs War” project was initiated in May 2022 by the association “Look Ukrainian!” with the aim of strengthening support for Ukraine in the world. The main component of the project is a cycle of six documentaries in which Ukrainian musicians, cinematographers, writers, photographers and other cultural figures tell about the war through their own stories and memories.

The project is created by the association “Promoting the development of cinematography in Ukraine – watch Ukrainian!” with the support of the European Union in Ukraine, the “MHP-Hromadi” Foundation and the “Bavilon” company.
