Summer is in full swing in Ukraine, while winter continues in the Antarctic at the same time. The sun there rises low above the horizon and hides again in a few hours. Polar scientists of the National Antarctic Science Center showed a photo of how the sun “paints” incredible colors in the sky above the Antarctic station “Vernadskyi”. “In this position, the light has to travel a longer way to the surface than when the sun is high above the horizon, so the colors are dispersed differently. ‘Short’ blue waves give way to ‘long’ red waves, and with the movement of the sun, the palette changes,” the scientists explain. According to the polar explorers, the color also depends on the air being filled with various particles: moisture, ice crystals, dust, etc. The richer, for example, the more humid the atmosphere is, the deeper the surrounding colors will be.
