“Put your aggression in your ass.” The premiere of the comedy “Lessons of Tolerance” was held in Kyiv

On February 13, on the eve of Valentine’s Day, a comedy premiere took place in one of the Kyiv cinemas “Lessons of tolerance” director Arkady Nepytalyuk. And if the appearance of posters of the tape in the capital’s cinemas even before the release of the film provoked unknown attackers to a “protest action” in the form of painted facade “October”then after the premiere, the first viewers thanked the authors for the timely messages of the tape.

How the audience met the story about the vicissitudes of the family of Ukrainian teacher Nadia Naidyuk, her husband Zenyk and two adult children – daughter Diana and son Denis, the journalist tells UP. Culture Maria Kabatsy.

Before the start of the screening, the cinema hall is very crowded. I meet a TV presenter and a blogger in the crowd Monroe. While we haven’t seen the movie yet, let’s discuss what happened in “October”. “When I saw this news, I was surprised. Historical context: 2024, Ukraine is fighting for the existence of the state with its teeth for the second year. And some jerk, I don’t know if it was his initiative, ideation, or someone paid, does such a senseless act of vandalism. But such actions no longer work. Conditionally, in 1991, maybe. In 2005, even this somehow still made some sense. That’s why I was surprised. Not even upset“, says Monroe.

In the center of the crowd, numerous interviews are distributed and the director greets the guests Arkady Nepytalyukperformers of the main roles Olena Uzlyuk, Oleksandr Yarema, Akmal Gurezov and producer Sergey Lavreniuk. Both friends and colleagues from the film industry, as well as theater people, came to support them – because the film is based on the play by Ihor Bilitsa “Gay Parade”and this work was heard for the first time by a large audience precisely from the theater stage.

“In 2017, I watched this play at the Malya Opera. This was my first acquaintance with the Wild Theater, and since then I have been their fan. I was sitting in the first row, everything happened before my eyes, and I was surprised. But now there will be a small spoiler: the play has a very sad ending“, Monroe shares her memories.

Nepytalyuk became interested in the story of a family that, for mercantile reasons, decides to join the program of spreading tolerance towards the LGBTQ community during theatrical readings at the Week of Current Plays in 2018. As the author of the play tells Ihor Bilytsthen the director approached him and said that this is a completely cinematic story, so he would like to make it into a film.

“When I first heard the play…, I immediately understood how everything fits together. This is an actual problem, and it is very close to me. In addition, there is drama in the text, which is manifested in a comedic, grotesque form. I immediately approached Igor and said that I wanted to make a movie based on his play“, Nepytalyuk himself told us earlier.

Among the first viewers of the screen version of the text was Bilitsa, the founder of the Wild Theater Yaroslav Kravchenko. She says that they came with almost the entire cast of her play “Gay Parade”, which became one of the most visited in the theater.

“This is my dream scheme. When a play appears first, then a performance and a movie appears. Therefore, I expect a different perspective from this work. Because we staged “Gay Parade” in 2018, and the film was being shot right now, it should have been a little different. On the other hand, homophobia thrives. And against the background of the war, it can be seen that it is flourishing very strongly“, says Kravchenko.

The founder of the Wild Theater notes that in “Lessons of Tolerance” she also “very interesting author’s works, because the film has a very strong author’s composition“.

Nepytalyuk admitted that he chose actors and actresses with good theater experience for his film. After all, they were shooting in the fall of 2022, under conditions of shelling and blackouts, so they had to do everything quickly. He set the task that the actors were on the site in the frame as if on a theater stage: they played the role in episodes of 10 minutes, and not “switched on” to a separate line.

So, Olena Uzlyuk (“Privitni”), Akmal Gurezov (the TV series “And There Will Be People”) and Oleksandr Piskunov (“And There Will Be People”, “11 Children from Morshin”) appeared in the cast, already verified by the previous works of the director Nepytalyuk. The role of the father of the family was entrusted to the nominee of “Zolotai Dzyga” for his role in the film “Pamfir”, the star of performances of the Wild Theater, the Golden Gate Theater and the Frank National Theater Oleksandr Yaremy. The anti-hero, the godfather of the Naydyuk family, was embodied on the screen by the theater actor, one of the most famous voices of Ukrainian dubbing (Gandalf, Optimus Prime, Dominic Toretto and Groot are voiced in Ukraine by his voice) Boris Georgievskyi. Karolina Mruga, a graduate of Dmytro Bogomazov’s course at the Karpenko-Kary Kyiv University of Theatre, Cinema and Television, was cast as Diana’s daughter.

Meanwhile, the audience is slowly settling into the auditoriums. “Dear friends, dear family, please go to your seats“, producer Lavreniuk jokingly encourages to start the show.

“With our film, we wanted to entertain our audience a little in these stormy times of war. I hope it stimulates you to think about how we all relate to each other. I hope you will have the desire to buy flowers for your loved ones, maybe to say “I love you” in the morning, to unexpectedly make coffee“, Lavrenyuk continues.

The creative producer of the tape takes the floor Oleksiy Gladushevskyi. As a novice theater director, he shares his perspective on “Lessons of Tolerance”: “It’s very cool that modern Ukrainian cinema has begun to seriously pay attention to modern Ukrainian drama. This script is also based on a modern play, so we’ll see how it was adapted.”

“Our cinema is true, honest, sincere. And since we show our characters truthfully and frankly, there are many true words. Don’t be afraid of them!” – Nepytalyuk gives the last instructions to the first viewers.

The movie starts, and “true words” (or swearing in our opinion) cause the audience not to be frightened, but to laugh. In general, the audience laughs a lot, because both the dialogues and the scenes themselves are created with a lot of humor. The authors of the tape also made the names of the 10 parts (or lessons) that make up the tape funny: for example, “Lesson 1. Because I’m crazy”, “Lesson 3. I want pink shoes”, “Lesson 5. Put your aggression in the hole” etc.

Between these parts, the audience has time to quickly exchange impressions of the story unfolding on the screen. “Cool movie, yes?” – the girl asks the boy next to her before the “fourth lesson”.So“, he answers.

After the end of the tape, guests of the premiere spill out of the hall and greet the performer of one of the main roles, Oleksandr Yarema, with long, loud applause when he finally comes out. Next, they applaud the entire team, which lines up for a group photo. The author of the play joins them Ihor Bilyts.

“I followed, of course, how people reacted to these texts, because I gave birth to them. Some points I thought: “Why didn’t I write like it was in the movie?” This is an important text for me. This is the first text, because before I wrote it, I did not know that I was a playwright. And this is the first text of mine that I see on a large scale screen“, he shares his impressions of the premiere of Bilytsi.

Right during our conversation, a mother and daughter approach him to thank him for the film. The woman says that the film is important and timely, and that she will recommend “Lessons of Tolerance” to friends. The girl confirms: she liked the film very much. And she says that she would go out with her teenage friends.

“For the author, it’s like winning the lottery“, – comments Bilyts greetings in his direction from the audience. “Those jokes that I was afraid people would laugh at – they did. And I’m happy about that. Where necessary, they fell silent. And what I liked most was when the hall froze several times at unimportant moments. So, it affects them“.

Finally, I ask the playwright about the incident in “October”. “20 years ago and I would have done it, you know? Because I lived in such an environment where this film was not shown to me. And I didn’t have critical thinking…I didn’t write about LGBT because I didn’t know anything about it. I knew about bias, I knew about bias, because I lived in such an environment. This is my life. These characters are me divided into the whole team…I was also homophobic, so I had to write a play to understand what was going on“, Bilyts sums up.
