Students should be able to independently choose subjects and teachers – MES

Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Mykhailo Vynnytskyi said that students should have the opportunity to independently choose additional subjects and teachers.

According to him, the Soviet stereotype is deeply rooted in society, according to which the main goal of higher education is to prepare a specialist for a specific job.

“This stereotype comes from the times of the USSR, when education “provided personnel for the national economy.” And obviously, this “provision” required specialized universities (agricultural, medical, motor vehicle, water, railway, forestry, etc.).

Now is a different time, different requirements. The goal of a truly higher education is to educate a subject citizen, an intellectual, a critically thinking professional“, – writes the official.

In his opinion, in order for higher education to develop such traits in students, they should be able to choose disciplines and teachers. At the same time, it is not a question of abandoning the basic educational program – it should still train students according to the competence necessary for work in a specific profession.

“But in addition to mandatory disciplines, a student should have the widest possible options for choosing courses, teachers, specialization within the chosen specialty or interdisciplinary. And the choice is wider if the institution is larger – not specialized, but on the contrary – broad-based,” – Vynnytskyi notes.

Earlier, the Minister of Education Oksen Lisovyi explained why the network of higher education institutions is being modernized, that is, the reduction or expansion of universities.

The number of entrants is decreasing every year and, unfortunately, this trend will continue. The main reason is depopulation. War also plays its role.

In view of this, it is very important to make effective decisions in time. Concentrate resources and join forces. Modernization of the ZVO network is one of the tools,” – says the minister.

We will remind you that earlier the Ministry of Education and Science announced the criteria for consolidation of educational institutions.
