Scientists have established a genetic link between suicide attempts and factors that affect physical and psychological health.
This is reported by MedicalXpress with reference to a scientific study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
These factors include impulsivity, smoking, chronic pain, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), lung disease, and heart disease.
The study was conducted by American specialists from the Huntsman Institute of Mental Health, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Duke University School of Medicine, Durham Veterans Affairs Health Care System and Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

A group of scientists analyzed the genetic data of 22 different population groups from around the world, including people of different ethnicities.
They studied more than 43,000 documented suicide attempts and more than 915,000 cases with a genetic match. To date, this is the largest genetic study of suicides.
“In psychiatry, we have a lot of tiny genetic effects, but when we add them all together, we start to see a real signal of genetic risk.” – explains study co-author Anna Dockerty.
Specialists followed the coincidence of genetic variations in people with suicide attempts.
The results showed that the combination of genetic predisposition with other stress factors – health status, life circumstances or traumatic events – can increase the risk of suicide.
“If we can use genetic information to characterize the health risks of those who attempt suicide, we can better identify those patients who need contact with the psychiatric care system.” – says Dockerty.
According to the scientist, understanding how suicide is related to other diseases should contribute to the emergence of new methods of diagnosis and treatment.
