The Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission took a satellite image of the Japanese archipelago in autumn. Photo dated November 1, 2023.
Japan consists of thousands of islands stretching about 2,500 kilometers in the western Pacific Ocean. The picture captures three of the four main islands that occupy most of the country, writes The European Space Agency.
Honshu is visible from north to south, the largest island stretching in an arc from northeast to southwest. Shikoku lies below the lower part of Honshu, and Kyushu is located in the lower part.
“The image also shows that Japan is mostly mountainous, with about 68% of the area covered by forest. The cooler temperatures and shorter daylight hours have caused the leaves to turn red and brown, especially in the upper part of the image. The colors of the leaves depend on tree species, local weather, as well as the height and orientation of the slopes”. – according to The European Space Agency.

In the picture, urban and agricultural land contrast sharply with gray tones. The largest territory on the east coast of Honshu is the capital of Japan – the largest metropolis in the world, Tokyo. To the south along the Pacific coast of Honshu you can see the cities of Nagoya and Osaka.
Sakurajima volcano can be seen on the southern island of Kyushu – a column of smoke rises from its peak.
