“She saved exhibits during the occupation”: colleagues remember the director of the museum in Kupyansk, who was killed by the shelling of the Russian Federation

On April 25, Russia fired missiles at the Kupyan Museum of Local History in the Kharkiv region. Director Iryna Osadcha and museum employee Olena Vodopyanova died at their workplace. The tragic news was reported by the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration, as well as the Regional Military Administration. “During her tenure as director, Iryna Anatoliivna did everything to make the museum one of the best in Kharkiv region. You can only imagine the horror and the level of risk: around the city, negotiating the preservation of exhibits. I believe that this is an example of heroism in the field of cultural heritage, museum work and simply as citizens,” the woman wrote. According to Natalia, Iryna died at her workplace – she was in her office when the rocket hit. “Your mother was an incredible person without exaggeration!” Natalya turned to the daughter of the deceased. The team was engaged in project management and, thanks to the grants won, actively developed,” recalled Olga Soshnikova, a museum worker from Kharkiv. During the full-scale invasion, Kupyansk was occupied by the Russians almost immediately – until the counteroffensive of the Defense Forces and de-occupation in September 2022. “Iryna Anatolyivna did everything possible to save the museum objects. After her release, she continued this important work of saving our cultural heritage. Until the last moment, like a true director, she cared about the lives of her employees. Two women aged 54 and 57 died as a result of the impact. 10 people were injured and four of them were hospitalized. At least 17 settlements in the Kharkiv, Kupyan and Chuguyiv districts of the Kharkiv region came under enemy fire that day.
