Split liver transplantation was performed for the first time in Ukraine. The donor organ was divided into two parts and transplanted into a baby and an adult.
This was reported in the First Medical Association of Lviv.
Doctors transplanted a smaller part of the liver to Luka from Zhytomyr region. The boy is only 1 year and 3 months old.
He was diagnosed with biliary atresia – a disease of the biliary tract. Without a transplant, the baby could die in a few months.

A 20-year-old man from the Lviv Region received a bigger fortune.
The donor was a 15-year-old boy who died due to brain damage.
Doctors also transplanted his heart and kidneys.
11-year-old Vlad from Ternopil region received the heart. At the age of 6 months, he was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy – enlargement of the ventricles of the heart.
The cause of the disease was inflammation of the lungs. The boy’s heart was enlarged three times and barely fit in the ribcage.

Kidneys were transplanted to 12-year-old Genya from Kharkiv and 18-year-old Ivan from Cherkasy. The boys were on hemodialysis, a blood purification procedure.
“Exactly a week has passed since the transplants. Now all patients feel well,” – doctors say.
