The Novovolynsk city court in Volyn punished a 17-year-old teenager who stabbed his 18-year-old friend with a knife, which led to his death. The juvenile was sentenced to 7 years in prison for the crime.

As it became known from the court verdict, the tragedy happened in the evening of December 1, 2023. A drunken teenager from Novovolynsk stabbed his 18-year-old friend in the stomach. He called his actions “self-defense”.

The victim was hospitalized at the Novovolynsk Central City Hospital. Within an hour he died in intensive care. According to the conclusion of the forensic medical examination, death occurred from acute blood loss as a result of a stab wound to the abdomen.

The accused is a second-year student of the Novovolynsk Vocational Education Center. He was not previously convicted.

In court, the accused admitted his guilt partially. He did not deny the deadly consequences of his actions. The teenager explained that in this way he only wanted to stop the beating by the victim who was “physically stronger than him”.

The accused said: that day he and his friends celebrated the Day of the Comrade Angel, they drank alcohol. On the way from the village of Tyshkovichi to Novovolynsk, he and the victim had a verbal conflict with the victim in the passenger compartment of the car, with shouting and shouting.

An 18-year-old friend suggested he go out and find out about the relationship on the street, where he allegedly punched him in the face first. A fight broke out, during which the minor accused took out a folding knife and hit an acquaintance with it on the left side of the stomach.

The teenager claims that he wanted to “just scare” in this way. After that, he immediately threw away the “tool”. And when he saw that the victim was falling on his back, he approached him and said “that everything will be fine, I started to provide help, I wanted to save his life.”

One of the comrades called an ambulance, but already after 10 minutes of waiting, the company decided to go for the ambulance in the direction of Novovolynska CML.

The mother of the deceased told the court that her son and the accused were friends. The latter often came to their home, she never saw any conflicts between them. She also asked the court to punish him in full.

In court, the accused’s mother said that she had been raising her son alone since he was three years old, as she had divorced his father. In her opinion, these circumstances could have influenced the formation of the teenager’s personality.

When her son was 12 years old, she married a second time and a stepfather came to the family, who takes part in the boy’s education. However, since 2014, he has been in the ranks of the Armed Forces. The mother added that her son “is kind, hard-working, and she did not think that this could happen.”

The judge found the 17-year-old student guilty of intentional grievous bodily harm that caused the death of the victim (Part 2 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code), and sentenced him to seven years in prison.

Also, 500,000 hryvnias in moral damages and 943 hryvnias in court costs will be collected from the representative of the accused in favor of the murdered man’s mother.
