The 1st season of the Japanese “Shelter” from Netflix, the 3rd season of the German-Austrian “The Pass” from Sky and the 4th season of the American “Barry” from NVO have what made the series so important in the last 20 years, when the story continues, but does not repeat itself, giving the viewer plot novelty and interest and formal originality and delight. “Spy/Master” will definitely please lovers of spy detectives, “Bunker” – lovers of fantasy, “Little Light” – historical drama, and “The Amazing Mrs. Maisel” – witty comedies. We can only envy you that you will be watching it for the first time! Shelter (Sankuchuari -seiiki-) Screening: Netflix, Japan The first series about sumo, made for world viewing. And a complete serial success. Sports and life, toughness and comedy create a complex delight. Moreover, if the bloody beating of a fighter on the tatami is wildly shocking, and the intentional fall of two 150-kilogram fighters on the trainer causes uncontrollable laughter to tears, both poles are balanced and create a harmonious and adequate world. Although it is about the shaky world of growing up an ignorant, harmful and quarrelsome, but strong and determined sumo wrestler, Enno (Earl Bailon), who is mocked, mocked and turned into a pathetic laughing stock, a real “ugly duckling”. Bailon almost obviously takes his form from the classic character of Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai”, Kikuti, brilliantly performed 60 years ago by Toshiro Mifune. Bunker (Silo) Screening: Apple TV+, Great Britain – USA Screen adaptation of one of the popular science fiction series of novels, novels and short stories written by the British Hugh Gowey shows us a dystopia, a post-apocalyptic world of people who have existed underground for more than 100 years in the deep, multi-story city-bunker. How they ended up there, why they can’t get out and why everyone who wants to get out dies – and some are released and expelled for saying the renunciation formula “I want to get out” – this is the main intrigue. It unfolds in parallel with the detective’s search for a chain of murders, and is a magnet inherent in such a scheme with the solution of the mystery in the finale. One of the books published in Ukrainian back in 2018 showed readers how original this puzzle is (which viewers of the 1st season will learn about when the 10th series is released on June 30). Meanwhile, fiction with a detective balances in the paradigm of “City of Amber” and “Sex Mission”, throwing up a bunch of interesting things, from “lights in the sky”, which are called stars due to ignorance, to a video camera, a kind of super-dangerous artifact… Holds. And it’s not only about flashbacks, but about the new circumstances of the past of the Austrian policeman Gedeon and the German policewoman Ellie, who is beautiful in her inconstancy. The duet of their stories and their acting is happiness for the viewer, despite the emotionlessness inherent in the role of the heroes. They are like cars on a high-speed dangerous track in the complete fog of Scandinavia. The mysticism and atmosphere of mystery, conveyed by long panoramas of the forest and shots of its inhabitants, is another Scandinavian feature of “The Pass”. The Best! Spy/Master (Spy/Master) Screening: HBO Max, Romania Romanian cinema is not only in the first lines of the list of modern film art (“Bad fuck or crazy porn” by Radu Zhude), – as “Spy/Master” shows, Romanians are just as masterful they also create TV series. “Spy…” is a directorial, screenwriting and editing balance of the best show genre, and this with very difficult material for a mass audience – the end of the 70s of the last century, when Romania lived under Soviet madness under the leadership of the dictator Ceausescu. The Cold War era serves as an arena for the struggle of almost all the world’s special services, shuffling not only the past and the present, but also the KGB with the Stasi, the CIA with Romanian counterintelligence, introducing the Egyptians into the case, and all this against the background of the epochal negotiations at Camp David between the USA, Egypt and Israel. That is, the leisurely chess of the detective quickly turns into the dynamics of a rugby thriller. And the search for Ceausescu’s missing “right hand” in Bonn turns into an exciting game of cat and mouse, reminding at the same time of “Bridge of Spies”, the recent series “Spy among friends” and “Spy, get out!”. A small light Screening: National Geographic-Hulu-Disney+, USA The story of the “Diary of Anne Frank” in this 8-episode series is told not by Anna, a young Jewish girl from Amsterdam, but by her father’s secretary, the Austrian Miep Gies (Bel Pauly, “The Morning Show”). The years represented in the series – from 1933 to 1944 – are the years when Meep, together with her husband, hid 8 Jews, doing almost slalom skiing, because it resembled the daily work of getting food for such a bunch people, skillful lies by the German military and wild fear, combined with the frantic psychological stress of working to save lives. This story has cute coexistence, witty conversations, and a tragic ending. The original approach to the subject – showing Anna’s story from the point of view of the person who tried to save her – is a bold innovation, and it shows how much people gave up their lives for the lives of others. Here, the role of Anna’s father, Otto, is played by Lev Schreiber, an American of Jewish origin with Ukrainian roots, who right now is helping Ukraine a lot in its fight against the onslaught of racism. And this is symbolic. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel – 5 (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) Screening: Amazon Prime Video, USA If you don’t know what to watch in the evening after work – the new 9 episodes of the 5th season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” may be appropriate for you. Of course, if you are able to perceive the machine-gun humor about the life of a Jewish family in New York, and without waiting for your laugh, but with so many jokes that you begin to regret not being able to write everything down and then pass it off as your jokes. For the 5th time in a row, the winner-choice-what-to-watch makes an additional genre deviation: from the 60s, the usual setting of the series, the viewer jumps into the future, where we see the daughter of the main character, who, in contrast to her mother, the stand-up artist Maisel, is brilliant not in funny performances, but in inventions. But otherwise, “…Maisel” pleases with the same perfectly recreated atmosphere of the past and the sense of jokes, which attracted so much in the first 2 seasons, and after “deflating” a little in the 3rd, it emerged now with new strength. The upheaval of the Jewish family and social criticism in America, jokes about gender and its role, love and hate, comedy of situations and sorrows of life – this is all “…Mrs. Maisel”. I recommend! Barry – 4 (Barry) Screening: HBO, USA Another leaper to the high levels of attention – a real takeoff of the already original series, where the main character is a former soldier, a hired killer and a novice actor. Already in the 1st season, the black comedy announced itself with the courage of ironic and evil sarcasm in relation to the acting schools of America with their relentless focus on career success and money. But Barry’s story becomes even more critical and painful from season to season. The shock finale of the 3rd seemed to be the climax. Nope – 4th gets an 8-episode frenzy with Barry being sent to prison, and the stories of all the characters – the acting teacher, the actress girl, the two gay mobsters, and the friend – do some plot somersaults, switching poles and genres, from comic to tragic and even absurd. The 35-minute episodes don’t have time to load to the end, instead, the creators manage to insert such original jokes into this thick cocktail of events and emotions, such as the meeting of the heroine and the director of the arthouse hit “CODE”, Sian Heder, who is now filming a mainstream movie.
